Police in Trinidad and Tobago have launched an urgent investigation following the discovery of dozens of human remains at a cemetery in Cumuto.
Officers responding to reports on Saturday uncovered 56 bodies at the site, including 50 infants, four adult males and two adult females. The discovery was made about 40 kilometres east of the capital, Port of Spain. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says preliminary findings suggest the remains may have been unlawfully disposed of, possibly involving unclaimed corpses.
Crime scene investigators have since secured the area and carried out detailed forensic examinations. Police say at least one adult male and one adult female showed signs of a prior post-mortem, while most of the adult bodies were found with identification tags typically used in morgues. Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro described the discovery as deeply troubling and assured the public that the matter is being treated with the highest priority. Specialised units, including the Homicide Bureau, are now working to determine the origin of the remains and whether any laws or procedures were violated.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
