Frequency changes for Nations Station

Radio Turks and Caicos is making a range of frequency changes in the TCI, with the aim of moving away from the 3 frequencies of 101.9, 103.9 and 107.7fm as you have known it for the last 30 years.

RTC Radio, now heard on all three, will convert to one frequency on the FM band "in order to rectify its current reception deficiencies and make it easier for listeners across the TCI to hear the station whenever our listeners or fans commute across the TCI."

After extensive checks by the Minister of Home Affairs & Communications the Hon Vaden Williams, the Board of Governors and the station’s Directors, the station will be moved on June 1st and will now be heard on the new FM frequency of 89.1 fm.

“We have seen many changes, and over time RTC has changed from an AM frequency to 3 frequencies and will "continue to be on the FM band, while we will reserve an AM band for a national radio service for the foreseeable future, should hazards or climate change affect our islands," said Minister Williams.

“In our life span, there is also some industry speculation that RTC might also be in Providenciales and we are happy to confirm that a sub-office and studio is located in Downtown Provo, where shows are broadcast from and other businesses conducted,” he added.

The Board’s decision to change the frequency, corresponds with the Telecommunication’s decisions. Further information will be made by Cabinet at a later date.

“The change to one frequency is certainly a boost for the population of the TCI, as more residents and listeners use a variety of ways to listen to the station and therefore, with adjustments to lifestyle, we made the necessary adjustments. 89.1 put us ahead as the Government’s station as we continue to educate and inform as well as entertain,” said Director of RTC, Mr. Chris Jarrett.

“Our team is excited for residents in the Sister islands to hear RTC on the same frequency, without having to guess where we are on the band. To this day, many still believe that 107, 103 and 101 was island-wide, when in fact these frequencies represented one island within the chain,” Jarrett added.

The change to 89.1 will be executed in one day, but will be done in phases, with the Capital Grand Turk first in making the switch, followed by South Caicos, Middle Caicos and Provo - in that order. Other changes in the license plan, will also affect other broadcasters from bidding for the old frequency - until after two months of departure.

RTC will also be launching as its next Secret, Radio 2, to be announced at a later date.

“This change in the frequency of the existing RTC, opens up additional services in order to avoid potential interference from the high power national Dominican stations, which sometimes bleed into the TCI,” said Chairman of the Board, Ryan Walkin.

Deputy Director for RTC, Lynette Thomas also added that the Team at RTC and previous boards also discussed what has now led to the designing of the new logo for RTC; with the change to FM 89 comes, new emails, new URL and this new logo which will be added to the website next week.

Thomas added that this logo signifies the coverage of RTC across the TCI with the colors of our country beautifully captured for all to see the new RTC. She ended by saying that in addition to a second arm, a much bigger secret will be revealed soon.

RTC on the new 89.1fm band, creates a bigger and brighter future for the oldest station in the TCI.

India delays plan to roll out 10,000 electric cars to 2019

India has pushed back a deadline to put thousands of battery-driven cars on the road by nearly a year, in a setback to its ambitions of having electric vehicles account for about a third of its fleet by 2030.

State-owned Energy Efficiency Services, which is responsible for procuring EVs to replace the gasoline and diesel vehicles used by government officials, will roll out the first 10,000 vehicles by March 2019, Saurabh Kumar, the agency's managing director, said. Energy Efficiency Services issued its first tender for 10,000 cars in September. It planned to roll out 500 cars by November and the rest by June.

"The need for building more charging points for 10,000 electric cars and states being slow in taking deliveries are the reasons for the delay," Kumar said in a phone interview. There are about 150 cars in the capital New Delhi and about 100 in southern Andhra Pradesh state and other provinces as of now, Kumar said. Of the about 200 charging stations built for these cars, more than 100 are in Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration wants to have more than 30 percent of vehicles run on electricity by 2030 in a bid to lower air pollution and curb reliance on fossil fuels. Cheap fossil fuel-driven cars and an absence of state subsidies for EVs make purchases by the government and companies critical for EV sales, according to BNEF, which expects EVs to account for about 7 percent of sales in India by 2030.

"These tenders are the largest drivers for EV demand" during the next three to five years, according to Allen Tom Abraham, a BNEF analyst in New Delhi. "If these large procurement programs falter, automakers would prolong any plans they have to introduce mass market EVs in India."

Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, which had emerged winners in Energy Efficiency Services' first tender for electric cars, didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. The government agency issued a second tender for 10,000 cars this year.

Kumar said, "I have demand for 19,000 cars today and if I don't get more, there won't be a third tender."

Microsoft is now more valuable than Google

Microsoft has passed Google (Alphabet) in market valuation for the first time in three years, reports CNBC. Microsoft is now valued at $753 billion, while Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is valued at $739 billion. It makes Microsoft the third most valuable company in the world, behind Apple and Amazon. This will likely only be temporary, though. Google originally passed Microsoft back in 2012, and the pair have traded positions a number of times in recent years. Still, it shows how much Microsoft has improved its stock price over the past five years since former CEO Steve Ballmer announced his plans to retire as Microsoft CEO.

Microsoft’s stock price has more than doubled since CEO Satya Nadella took over four years ago. Nadella has refocused Microsoft on cross-platform technologies, the cloud, artificial intelligence, and wants to secure the future of quantum computing and mixed reality headsets. Nadella has axed Microsoft’s failed Windows Phone efforts, and the company has generally moved away from the concept of having Windows at the center of everything it offers.

While Microsoft still trails behind Apple’s market valuation of $923 billion and Amazon’s $782 billion market cap, it has a diverse range of businesses where it generates revenue from. Google generates roughly 90 percent of its revenue from advertising, and the iPhone accounts for roughly 60 percent of Apple’s entire revenue. In Microsoft’s most recent quarter its Windows, Surface, and gaming divisions made up roughly 35 percent of revenue, with cloud taking around 30 percent, and Office and productivity more than 30 percent.

Microsoft might be facing questions over its relevance to consumers, but its stock price is now close to passing $100 per share. Some analysts believe the company’s cloud business could double in the next few years to help push the company towards a $1 trillion market value.

Caribbean lags in sports spending, says IDB report

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (CMC) — A new report by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says Latin America and the Caribbean lag in sports spending, stating that the region could get a development boost from sports activities that improve the region's social and health benefits.

But the report warns that the programmes must be “properly designed and monitored”.

The report says Latin American and Caribbean government spending on sports is “modest”, pointing to preliminary analysis of fiscal budgets from 17 countries that shows that spending on sports averages around 0.1 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

The region's spending on sports is about one-third of the percentage spent by European nations, without considering special programmes for elite athletes or Olympic financing, the report says.

“World Cup soccer season is a good time to celebrate the benefits of sports,” said IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno on Friday. “This report shows our region needs to spend more on sports, not just to produce better athletes but also to foster happier, less violent and healthier societies.

“To gain the social benefits, we also need to design better sports programmes and rigorously evaluate those that already exist,” he added.

The report says while the region produces first-rate athletes in numerous professional sports, exercise is a marginal activity.

Based on self-reported data, one out of three adults in the region qualifies as physically inactive, compared to the global average of one in four, defined as participating in less than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

The report says the lack of activity is pervasive in all demographic segments, “but it is even more worrisome among school-going adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17, with almost nine out of 10 adolescents not achieving the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily”.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, the prevalence of physical inactivity is 35 per cent higher in women than in men worldwide, and 41 per cent higher in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Almost one in four adults in Latin America and the Caribbean qualify as obese (a body mass index of 30 per cent fat or higher) and more than half are overweight, the report says.

The report notes that sports can build human capital and enhance productivity by improving physical and mental health, discouraging substance abuse, and inspiring athletic as well as academic achievement.

Sports can encourage capital accumulation, facilitate the workings of markets, and strengthen institutions through their effect on social capital, trust and culture, and crime, the report says.

Data from the United States show that expanding girls' access to athletic participation translated into a 10-percentage point jump in state-level female sports participation, according to the report.

This, in turn, the report says, generated a one percentage point increase in female college attendance and a one to two percentage point rise in female labour force participation.

Research using data from the German Socioeconomic panel has found that active participation in sports boosts earnings by about 1,200 euros annually over a 16-year period, compared to no or very little sports activity, according to the report.

These results, it says, translate into a rate of return on sports activities in the range of five per cent to 10 per cent, on a par with an additional year of schooling. Similar results have been found for the United States, the report says.

In Brazil, the report says salaries of physically active individuals are between 15 per cent and 31 per cent higher than those of sedentary counterparts.

But the report warns that authorities need to be cautious when opting for policies based on these studies.

“It may be that people who choose to play sports have certain unobservable skills and characteristics that also make them more successful later in life,” said Carlos Scartascini, a lead researcher at the IDB and a study coordinator.

The report says evidence is mounting that even the programmes with the best intentions could have unintended negative results.

It says some programmes increase the prevalence of the behaviours that they try to curve, such as substance abuse and violence.

Researchers using a Swedish sample found that participation in activities with low structure — such as a lightly supervised youth recreation centre — was associated with high levels of antisocial behaviour, the report says.

ABC drops Roseanne show after racist tweet

ABC TV network has cancelled comedian Roseanne Barr's show after she posted a racist tweet likening an African-American former Obama aide to an ape.

ABC said: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values and we have decided to cancel her show."

Barr's tweet said Valerie Jarrett was the child of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes film.

She deleted the post and apologised but could not contain the backlash.

"I apologise to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans," Ms Barr wrote, after follow-up posts in which she defended her remarks as a "joke".

"I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste."

Ms Barr also wrote on Tuesday that she was "now leaving Twitter", but it was unclear if that meant she would deactivate her account.

Ms Barr's initial tweet about Mrs Jarrett came in response to another Twitter user, who accused Mrs Jarrett of helping to conceal purported spying during the Obama administration.

Ten days ago, she pledged that she was "leaving all social media except Instagram", saying it was because the atmosphere had become "toxic".

Ms Barr's cast mate Sara Gilbert posted on Twitter on Tuesday that the cancellation was "incredibly sad and difficult".

"We've created a show that we believe in," Ms Gilbert said in the tweet. "One that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member."

Following Ms Barr's tweet, one of Roseanne's consulting producers, Wanda Sykes, said she would not be returning to the show.

Robert Iger, chief executive of Disney, ABC's parent company, responded to the cancellation announcement, saying: "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing."

The sitcom's cancellation comes just a month after the hit show was revived.

The premiere in April garnered high ratings, attracting over 18 million viewers.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ms Barr tweeted an apology to Chelsea Clinton - the daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton - after claiming she was married to a relative of billionaire investor George Soros, a bogeyman to right-wing conspiracy theorists.

On Sunday, the 65-year-old comedian also criticised the Obama family for signing on with Netflix to produce TV programmes and movies.

"I don't think any President should go from WH to producing big media 4 public consumption."
Skip Twitter post 2 by @therealroseanne

"It's an unholy alliance. Leave show biz 2 professionals," she wrote, adding that "going from show biz 2 WH is OK".

Barr also implied that she was considering a presidential run someday in the future.

The comedy series became a political talking point because in the show Barr plays a supporter of US President Donald Trump.

President Trump, whom Barr also supports off-camera as well, called to congratulate her on the success of the rebooted show.

Dow tumbles 430 points on Italy fears and US-China trade tensions

Volatility gripped Wall Street on Tuesday.

The Dow fell as much as 430 points -- 1.6% -- on fears about a political crisis in Italy and renewed trade tensions between the United States and China. The index turned negative for the year.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq slipped 1.3% and 0.7% apiece.

Italy is headed for new elections, and investors worry the result could throw the European Union into turmoil. The yield on Italy's debt surged as investors demanded higher payouts in return for taking on risk.

In Wall Street's worst-case scenario, Italy, the third-largest economy in the European bloc, would vote to leave the euro.

"It's got the earmarks of a disgruntled Italy," said Arthur Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR. "We've gotten to the point now where it's catching people's attention."

The White House also announced Tuesday that it would impose 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of goods from China and place new limits on Chinese investments in the United States. The move caught investors by surprise. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said a trade war with China was "on hold" less than 10 days ago.

Signs of fear showed up across the market on Tuesday.

The VIX (VIX), Wall Street's fear gauge, spiked 17% to its highest level since May 4. CNNMoney's Fear & Greed Index pushed into fear territory. A week ago, the index was flashing greed.

Investors rushed to safety in bonds. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury fell sharply to 2.81%.

Last month, the 10-year yield crossed 3% for the first time since 2014 as the Federal Reserve raises interest rates. Yields move in the opposite direction of prices.

Banks slumped on the bond rally. Falling bond yields can make it harder for banks to make money on the interest they charge for loans.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) dropped 4%, while American Express (AXP) and Goldman Sachs (GS) lost 3.5%.

As yields fell, investors headed to higher-dividend stocks.

Coca-Cola (CCE)was the only positive company on the Dow. The utility sector, another safety play, was the sole sector on the S&P 500 in the green.

"It's a typical risk-off kind of day," Hogan said.

Meanwhile, falling oil prices put pressure on energy stocks.

Oil prices have slumped around 10% since Saudi Arabia's energy minister said on Friday that Saudi-led OPEC and Russia would pump more oil. US crude dipped 2.5% to $66 a barrel.

President Trump confirms top North Korean official to visit New York for meetings on 'expected' summit

President Donald Trump announced on Twitter Tuesday that a high level North Korean official is heading to the U.S. for meetings surrounding a potential revival of the June 12 Singapore summit with leader Kim Jong Un.

The announcement comes a day after the White House described the summit as "expected" in a readout of a call between Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The president wrote a letter to Kim last Thursday calling off the meeting.

The White House said Tuesday that Trump will meet with Abe on June 7 at the White House.

"Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more," the president tweeted. "Kim [Yong] Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York."

We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea. Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York. Solid response to my letter, thank you!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2018

According to the New York Times, Kim Yong-chol will be the most senior North Korean official to visit the country since Vice Marshal Jo Myong-rok met President Bill Clinton at the White House in 2000. Press secretary Sarah Sanders said Kim will meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "later this week."

The president's tweet also referred in part to two U.S. delegations overseas holding meetings in Singapore and North Korea with officials on diplomatic issues, along with a logistics team led by deputy chief of staff for operations Joe Hagin.

Greeted by a group of reporters in his Singapore hotel Monday, Hagin said only, "I have a lot of meetings today."

Speaking of the meetings on Fox and Friends, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said both delegations were dispatched by the president to prepare in the event the meeting moves forward on June 12.

"As the president said if it doesn't happen June 12 it could happen thereafter," Conway said.

North Korea threatens to withdraw from summit with Trump: Report

North Korea is threatening to cancel its upcoming summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump over South Korea-U.S.military drills, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing North Korean state media.

North Korea has also canceled high-level talks with South Korea that were scheduled for Wednesday local time over those same drills, according to Yonhap.

The summit between the American and North Korean leader was first announced in March and Trump tweeted the scheduled date -- June 12 -- and location -- Singapore -- last week.

Three Americans that were held in North Korea for more than a year each were released last week, in what was seen by many as a gesture of goodwill before the scheduled summit.

The U.S. has not heard from North Korea and is still planning for the summit to go ahead, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

"What we have to go on is what Kim Jong Un has said before, that he understands and appreciates the importance to the United States of having these joint exercises, the Republic of Korea has as well," Nauert said. "We've received no formal or even informal notification of anything."

As the U.S. has done on multiple previous occasions, Nauert defended the exercises as "legal," "planned well, well in advance" and "not provocative."

Col. Rob Manning, a Department of Defense spokesperson, said in a statement the exercises are "part of the ROK-U.S. Alliances’ routine, annual training program to maintain a foundation of military readiness."

"The purpose of the training is to enhance the ROK-U.S. alliance’s ability to defend the ROK and enhance interoperability and readiness. While we will not discuss specifics, the defensive nature of these combined exercises has been clear for many decades and has not changed," Manning said.

Separately, a senior State Department official told reporters the U.S. and South Korea were in touch "a short while ago," but referred questions on that to South Korea. That official confirmed that there's been no contact from North Korea.

The Price of Representation

By now many Turks and Caicos Islanders would have heard that two of our premier athletes, Mr. Devante Gardiner and Mr. Kevarno Handfield, have lost their athletic scholarships from Saint Augustine University and cut from their athletics team for choosing to represent our Beautiful by Nature Turks and Caicos Islands in the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia. I, along with many others, are calling on the Minister with responsibility for Sports, the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Finance to fix this situation and make these young men whole again, as a decision to give these two gentlemen a scholarship could help to repair the damage that has been done and overt long term consequences to their futures.

If further convincing is needed, by all means continue reading. Given the fact that both gentlemen earned a scholarship for athletics in part or in full is a testament to their value and skill as no University is going to give an athletic scholarship unless you are top notch or have the promise to be top notch. Additionally, I understand it was at the urging of key individuals in the TCI athletics community that the gentlemen choose Country over School and clearly did not understand the risk that they were taking. For us to now abandon them would be sending a clear message as to our priorities for our youth, their development and the way we support those that work so hard to represent us. . These two gentlemen made up half of the 4X400 relay team that made history for the TCI at those same Commonwealth games by qualifying for a final event along with Ifeanyi Otuonye who also qualified in Long Jump Finals.

Remember how excited we were to see the pictures of the TCI making the 4X400 relay finals?? Remember that now that these young men need your help. In the case of Devante who has at least two more years of eligibility, we might be looking at our own next Usain Bolt or Delano Williams in the making with the times he’s making and what continued training and competition will produce in years to come. In the case of Kevarno, he is one year away from completing his Bachelor’s degree in Business and Sports Management. I am sure he has a place in the department of Sports. These young Turks and Caicos Islanders need their country’s support.

As the saying goes “Money Ain’t a Thing”… How do I know? In the recent Post Cabinet Statement, Cabinet approved a proposal for an amnesty on penalties on outstanding arrears of hotel and tourism tax payable under the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism (Taxation) Ordinance. Cabinet also approved the write-off of both Business License and Scholarship Contribution Arrears. Between both those actions, I am pretty sure the value is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars if not over a million dollars. If we can take actions to benefit those above, then we can act to benefit our Youth who have sacrificed their scholarships by putting TCI first and are indeed the future of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

I call on the principals above to put their heads together and support these young gentleman on continuing their sports and academic success.

Stay Blessed,

Jamell Robinson
