“With sorrow, I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible," said the Director of the Holy See press office Matteo Bruni’s statement.

The Vatican press office has said that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for the faithful to pay their respects.

No further details have been announced.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was named the 265th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on April 19, 2005, at the age of 78, and chose the name of Benedict XVI. He was the first German pope in several centuries, the second consecutive non-Italian pope, and the oldest pope elected since Clement XII in 1730, according to church records.

He was succeeded by Pope Francis, from Argentina, who was elected on March 13, 2013.

Barbara Walters, trailblazing TV icon, dies at 93

Barbara Walters, the trailblazing television news broadcaster and longtime ABC News anchor and correspondent who shattered the glass ceiling and became a dominant force in an industry once dominated by men, has died. She was 93.

Walters joined ABC News in 1976, becoming the first female anchor on an evening news program in the U.S. Three years later, she became a co-host of 20/20 and in 1997, she launched the daytime panel talk show The View.

Walters made her final appearance as a co-host of The View in 2014, but remained an executive producer of the show and continued to do some interviews and specials for ABC News.

In a career that spanned five decades, Walters won 12 Emmy awards, 11 of those while at ABC News.

Barbara Jill Walters was born in Boston on Sept. 25, 1929, to Dena and Louis "Lou" Walters. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York in the 1950s, Walters found work as a publicist and television writer before landing a spot as a writer on NBC's Today show in 1961. She became the program's first female co-host in 1974, and won her first Emmy award the following year for Outstanding Talk Show Host.

In 1976, Walters found a new home on ABC's Evening News, making history as the first female co-anchor of an evening news program in the U.S.

At ABC, her interviews were wide-ranging and her access to public figures was unparalleled. She crossed the Bay of Pigs with Fidel Castro and conducted the first joint interview with Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. She also developed a reputation for asking tough questions.

There were lighter interviews, too. For years, Walters hosted an annual Oscars special, in which she interviewed Academy Award nominees and became known for making a number of them reveal deeply personal information, and even cry. In 1994, she launched her annual "Most Fascinating People" special, which aired every December and afforded her the opportunity to chat with the year's top newsmakers.

With The View, Walters created a forum for women of different backgrounds and views to come together and discuss the latest hot topics in the news, a format that has since been widely imitated by other networks.

Walters was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1989 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2000.

Part of ABC News' Headquarters in New York was renamed The Barbara Walters Building in May 2014, in recognition of her accomplishments and influence.

During the ceremony, Walters accepted the honor, saying, "People ask me very often, 'what is your legacy?' and it's not the interviews with presidents, or heads of state, nor celebrities. If I have a legacy, and I've said this before and I mean it so sincerely, I hope that I played a small role in paving the way for so many of you fabulous women."

Brittney Griner speaks out for first time since being released from Russian prison

Brittney Griner thanked her family and friends and credited her faith for helping her survive her time in custody in her first comments since being released from a Russian prison earlier this month.

"It feels so good to be home! The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn," Griner wrote on Instagram Friday. "I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help."

The U.S. swapped the WNBA star for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout on December 8.

Griner also specifically thanked President Joe Biden and urged the U.S. to continue to fight to bring imprisoned ex-Marine Paul Whelan home from Russia.

"President Biden, you brought me home and I know you are committed to bringing Paul Whelan and all Americans home too," she wrote. "I will use my platform to do whatever I can to help you. I also encourage everyone that played a part in bringing me home to continue their efforts to bring all Americans home. Every family deserves to be whole."

Griner's post on Instagram included a photo of her stepping off a plane in Texas upon returning to the U.S. and a photo of her hugging her wife, Cherelle. Griner’s agent confirmed that she has left a San Antonio military base, where she was recuperating, and is on her way home.

Griner said she plans to play for the Phoenix Mercury when the WNBA season starts up next spring.

Griner was taken into custody at a Moscow area airport in February in possession of vaping cartridges containing hashish oil, an illegal substance in Russia. She pleaded guilty in July and was sentenced to nine years in prison on August 7.

Massive fire at a Cambodian hotel & casino

A massive fire at a Cambodian hotel casino that lasted more than 12 hours has killed at least 19 people and injured more than 60, while other victims were apparently not yet accounted for as of Thursday. Close neighbor Thailand sent firetrucks and emergency workers to help cope with the crisis.

Some victims were believed to still be under debris or in locked rooms that rescue teams could not immediately access, so the death toll is expected to rise.

The dead and injured comprised people of several nationalities, including Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Vietnamese and Cambodian. A local Buddhist temple was being used to receive their bodies. Videos posted on social media sites show people falling from a roof after they were trapped by the fire at the Grand Diamond City casino and hotel. The video also showed at least one man falling as the flames reached the roof.

The blaze, which started around midnight Wednesday, was finally put out at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Casinos are illegal in Thailand, but neighboring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos host the lucrative industry. Cambodia has an especially active casino industry because the Southeast Asian country is also a popular tourist destination with convenient international connections.

The Grand Diamond City casino complex has 500 employees, and had 1,000 customers on Wednesday.

People flying from People flying from China will need negative COVID-19 test to enter US

Starting January 5, people flying from China will need a negative COVID-19 test within two days of their departure in order to enter the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

The newly announced restrictions come amid what the CDC called a "surge" in cases of COVID-19 in China as well as a "lack of adequate and transparent" data being reported by the Chinese government.

The restrictions, which take effect after midnight on January 5, apply to every airline passenger 2 years or older regardless of vaccination status, according to the CDC. Passengers will need a negative test, such as a PCR or antigen test, no more than two days before they leave China, Hong Kong or Macau.

New Year's Rockin' Eve's Ryan Seacrest predicts Times Square will be "packed"

Saturday night on ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest, Ryan and his co-host, Liza Koshy, will be in New York's Times Square counting down to midnight. In 2020, COVID kept Times Square empty, and in 2021, the Omicron variant meant strict limits on attendance. But this year, Seacrest predicts Times Square will be "packed."

"We're hoping there will be a normal or larger-than-normal crowd because we haven't had that ... ability in the last couple of years," he told ABC Audio on Thursday. "There is, potentially, a little rain, but I think we'll see those pens full and the streets packed." Koshy predicted the same, saying, "Just on our way to this interview today, it was packed."

Aside from the crowd and the performers, Seacrest and Koshy will be laser-focused on the task at hand.

"There's a lot of trust, I think, instilled in us to make sure that we time 10 to zero on time," Seacrest explained, adding, "People probably have us on in the background ... but once it gets to be 11:45, it's time for us to make sure we can deliver a new year."

And once the ball drops? Seacrest said his late mentor Dick Clark told him the right thing to do is to let "the visuals narrate how big of a deal Times Square is."

Seacrest noted, "Dick used to say, 'Once you say "Happy New Year," just be quiet. Just let the story be told by what you see.'"

At midnight, it's time for the traditional New Year's kiss. Koshy will smooch her mom, while Seacrest laughed, "I'll kiss my girlfriend and probably her father. He's a really, really good guy and I have to jump high to reach him ... the guy's tall!"

After that comes dinner. Seacrest used to have a huge meal before the grueling broadcast, but said he's learned, "It's better to eat at 1:30 in the morning."

Mariah Carey reacts to her latest Billboard milestone: "I'm jumping up and down in the snow"

Mariah Carey is still processing her latest Billboard milestone. Thanks to her hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" scoring another week at #1, she is now the first and only artist to lead the chart for 90 weeks.

Mariah celebrated the new milestone on Instagram, writing, "I can’t even handle this news.. I’m jumping up and down in the snow..!"

She added that as she's celebrating in her element, her dog Cha Cha is "swimming around" while her other pet, Mutley, is "howling like a kid running around in circles feeling our energy."

Billboard confirmed "All I Want for Christmas Is You" scored its 11th week at #1 on the Hot 100, which cemented her 90th week overall on top of the chart. In addition, she became the second artist behind Boyz II Men to have had three separate singles dominate the chart for 11 or more weeks.

Mariah also enjoyed a fun new milestone when it comes to streaming. She beat a record set by Adele for the most single-day streams on Spotify — on Christmas Eve, no less.

The Independent reports British listeners blasted "All I Want for Christmas" 21.273 million times over a 24-hour span, which broke the record previously set by Adele's "Easy on Me." That song was streamed 19.747 million times in a single day back in 2021.

His daughter Kely Nascimento has kept fans updated on her father's condition with regular social media updates from hospital.

On Thursday she posted a picture of what appeared to be Pele's family's hands on his body in hospital and wrote: "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."
