San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers win

The San Francisco 49ers held off a late fightback by the Dallas Cowboys to claim a thrilling 23-17 win and earn the first upset of the NFL play-offs.

Day two of wildcard weekend also saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cruise to a 31-15 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

And the Kansas City Chiefs, who Tampa Bay beat in last year's Super Bowl, beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 42-21.

That result ended Ben Roethlisberger's career after 18 years and two Super Bowl wins as the Steelers' quarterback.

Although there has been no formal announcement of his retirement, the 39-year-old told a news conference that he was going to "miss these guys", adding: "As we move from one chapter to the next, it's going to be different, it's going to be fun, it's going to be a new challenge and I'm looking forward to it."

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said of Roethlisberger: "It's been an honour and a pleasure, man. I don't have the words."

Thousands without power as US and Canada hit by winter storm

A major winter storm has brought heavy snow and ice to parts of the US and Canada, putting more than 80 million people under weather warnings.

More than 145,000 people are without power in some south-eastern states, and thousands of flights are cancelled.

Virginia, Georgia, and North and South Carolina have all declared states of emergency.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) says more than 1ft (30cm) of snow is expected in some areas.

Snow and ice could result in "dangerous travel, power outages, and tree damage", the NWS warned.

Highway patrols reported hundreds of vehicle accidents, according to the Associated Press news agency.

There were also forecasts of possible coastal flooding in some areas, including in New York City and parts of Connecticut, with warnings that roads and infrastructure could be affected.

In Canada's Ontario province, which shares a border with New York state, officials issued storm warnings on Sunday morning for much of the south. Toronto, the capital of the province and Canada's largest city, is forecast to get seven inches (20cm) of snow.

More than 3,000 flights into and out of the US were cancelled on Sunday, according to the FlightAware data tracking website.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina was among the worst hit, with almost 90% of flights scrapped, and a message on its website urged passengers to check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

How to stay safe in freezing weather
In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster called on residents to stay off the roads.

"This is going to be a pretty bad storm in the upper part of the state," he said, adding that it was "good news" that the storm was forecast to hit on a weekend and on a public holiday on Monday, when fewer people would need to travel.

Volcano Eruption" in the Pacific created a tsunami along with other pressing issue

Significant damage has been reported after a tsunami hit the Pacific island nation of Tonga, but communications problems are making getting the full picture difficult.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted on Sunday, about 65km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku'alofa.

The eruption, which was heard as far away as the US, caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga.

So far there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or deaths.

Friends and family of a British woman, Angela Glover, say she is missing. In social media posts, they say she was swept away in the waves.

Internet and telephone communications are extremely limited and outlying coastal areas remain cut off, leaving the real scale of the damage unclear.

"Significant damage has been reported along the western coast of Tongatapu, including to resorts and the waterfront area of northern Nuku'alofa," the New Zealand High Commission in Tonga posted on Facebook, referring to Tonga's main island.

The Ha'atafu Beach Resort on Tongatapu posted that the resort had been "completely wiped out" and "the whole western coastline completely destroyed," according to family members who were based in Tonga.

It said those living there "just managed to get to safety running through the bushes and escaping," and were "not able to save anything".

Pacific correspondent for Television New Zealand Barbara Dreaver wrote in a Facebook post that it would take "at least two weeks before international phones and internet are working again," due to damage inflicted on a critical submarine cable as a result of the volcanic eruption.

REvil ransomware gang arrested in Russia

The United States had offered a reward of up to $10m (£7.3m) for information leading to the gang members, following ransomware attacks.
Russia's intelligence bureau FSB said the group had "ceased to exist". However, it does not appear that any Russian members of the gang will be extradited to the United States.

The agency said it had acted after being provided with information about the REvil gang by the US. According to the Russian state news service Tass, REvil "developed malicious software" and "organised the theft of money from the bank accounts of foreign citizens". The FSB said it had seized more than 426 million rubles (£4m), including about £440,000 worth of crypto-currency. It also seized more than 20 "premium cars" which had been purchased with the proceeds of crime.

"The organised criminal association has ceased to exist and the information infrastructure used for criminal purposes was neutralised," the FSB said in a statement. Russia's announcement comes during a standoff between the United States and Russia.

Moscow is demanding Western guarantees, including that Nato will not expand further. It has also built up its troops near the Ukraine border. These arrests are a monumental moment in cyber-crime and cyber-relations between the US and Russia. For years, Russia has ignored and denied accusations that Russian ransomware hackers are allowed safe harbour in the country to attack western targets. In their Geneva Summit last summer, Russia's President Putin and US President Biden agreed to open discussions about how to combat the scourge of ransomware, but even the most optimistic experts had given up on seeing the talks bear fruit.

The Russian authorities arresting the REvil gang on Russian soil is a huge result that few would have predicted. Although largely disbanded since September last year, REvil was one of the most prolific ransomware gangs, and this arrest sends a huge message to Russian cyber-crime crews: the party is over. The operation is also the first time in years that the US and Russia have collaborated on a cyber-crime operation. It may point to a thawing of relations, which is already being widely celebrated in the cyber-security world.

The arrests were a team effort within the policing teams together with information from our community and we will be relentless in going after those who are causing most harm but we cannot do this alone. I would urge anyone with any information to share this directly with us or through crimestoppers; crime is everyone’s business and telling us what you know may be the difference’

Hostage standoff at Texas synagogue ends peacefully, but questions remain

Counterterrorism specialists in Great Britain are working with their counterparts at the FBI in a search for clues about the man who held four people hostage at a North Texas synagogue on Saturday.

The initial indication is that British national Malik Faisal Akram was shot and killed by the Hostage Rescue Team after it made what the FBI called the “deliberate decision” to breach the synagogue Saturday night to bring the 10-hour standoff to an end, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News.

After-action forensics will determine with certainty who fired the fatal shot and under what circumstances. The standoff began as Shabbat services were being livestreamed from Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, just west of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. An angry man is heard shouting, cursing and occasionally apologizing after he takes his hostages. It ended 11 hours later when the final three captives escaped and the suspect was killed by gunfire.

President Joe Biden weighed in on the standoff on Sunday while volunteering at a hunger relief organization in Philadelphia, calling it an “act of terror.”

Biden said he told Attorney General Merrick Garland to “make sure we got the word out” to synagogues and places of worship that the administration is “not going to-tolerate this.”

Biden said that “the idea of background checks is critical” and that the amount of guns sold on the street lately is “just ridiculous,” even placing the blame on Washington for failing to act on gun control. But moving forward on gun control, or any of the administration's legislative priorities, has proved difficult for the president

Barbados prepares for elections

The Electoral and Boundaries Commission in Barbados on Monday said that just over 266, 000 people are eligible to cast ballots in Wednesday’s general election that Prime Minister Mia Mottley has called 18 months ahead of the constitutional deadline.

“I can now tell you that 266,330 persons are registered to vote. The register for elections has been printed and distributed to all political parties and independent candidates and the election officers are collecting the last of their equipment and supplies as we speak,” EBC chairman, Leslie Haynes told a news conference, adding “I can say to you all that the EBC is ready for general elections on January 19, 2022”.

In the last general election, there was a turnout of 60 per cent with 255, 833 people eligible to vote.

A total of 108 candidates, representing seven political parties and nine independents are contesting the poll that political observers say will be a straight fight between the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).

In the 2018 general elections, Mottley created history when she led the BLP to a clean sweep of all the 30 seats in the Parliament, defeating the then DLP administration of Freundel Stuart.

Barbados becomes the latest Caribbean country to be staging a general election during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic following countries like St. Kitts-Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Bahamas, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands and our very own Turks and Caicos Islands.

Prince Andrew stripped of his military titles after court loss

It appears the British Royal Family is distancing itself from Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. A day after he was denied to have a lawsuit dismissed from alleged Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, it was announced Thursday that his military titles and royal patronage have been returned to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duke of York will no longer use the style "His Royal Highness" in any official capacity, a royal source told ABC News, and his military and patronage roles will be redistributed among members of the royal family.

"With The Queen's approval and agreement, The Duke of York's military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen," the palace said in a statement. "The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen."

Prince Andrew, the second youngest of Queen Elizabeth and the late Prince Philip's four children, served for 22 years in the Royal Navy.

On Wednesday, a federal judge in New York rejected Prince Andrew's claim that a 2009 settlement agreement between Giuffre and Epstein exempted him from civil litigation. Giuffre alleges Epstein trafficked her to Prince Andrew, who took advantage and sexually abused her when she was under 18.

The judge called his argument to toss the case "ambiguous" and that it lacked "clear and precise" drafting.
