Serious Assault on Mr. Kevin Newman in the TCI

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force continues to investigate the shooting of Mr. Kevin Newman in Grace Bay in the early hours of Friday 23rd June 2017.

Mr. Newman was a visitor to the Islands and has returned to the US where he continues to receive medical treatment. Detectives from the RT&CIPF Serious Crime Team are actively following lines of enquiry to identify those responsible for what was a callous act in shooting Mr Newman.

In addition, Detectives are also investigating other offences of robbery that have occurred in Providenciales although there is nothing to connect them to the assault of Mr Newman at this stage. Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said this morning: “The shooting of Mr. Newman was a callous and cowardly attack and my thoughts are with Mr. Newman and his family as he recovers in hospital. My detectives are doing all they can to bring those responsible to justice. However, they need the help of the community. Someone knows or suspects who may have committed this act and I urge you to speak to one of my officers or, if you wish to remain anonymous, please call CrimeStoppers on 1-800-8477 or contact the Chalk Sound Police Station at 338-5901. I know the community and those visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands are concerned about the attack on Mr. Newman.

To reassure the community, visitors and those who work within the tourism industry, addition visible policing has been deployed to key locations. My officers would welcome a chat with you if you are concerned. I myself worked with my team Saturday evening and I spoke to a number of tourists and partners providing security at the hotels and resorts in order to provide support to my teams and so that I can see for myself how we are seeking to reassure and engage with the community and visitors.

I would again ask that people remain alert and vigilant but not alarmed. Sensible precautions should be taken when walking around the Island late in the evening. These include taking licenced taxis where possible and walking together in groups. I would also advise not carrying more valuables than you need and to make use of safes and where they are available. I am grateful for the public's support and patience during what is a worrying time for the Islands. If you are concerned, speak to my officers, they are here to serve, support and assist you. My officers are working hard to keep you safe and we will use all available tools and tactics to prevent offences and bring those who seek to commit crime to justice. "

Also speaking out on the assault is HE.Governor Freeman.

Like everyone in the Turks and Caicos Islands, I was appalled to hear of the shooting of Mr Kevin Newman in Providenciales.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr Newman and his family and friends at this time. Officers of the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) are continuing to carry out investigations into this terrible crime and are in continuing touch with the family of Mr. Newman. I have been in regular contact with the Acting Commissioner of Police and with the Premier since the shooting.

I want to assure the public that the RTCIPF are doing all they can to bring the perpetrators of this sickening crime to justice. We are united in our commitment to combating crime in the TCI. I want to reiterate the words expressed by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Trevor Botting, in his earlier statement – this is a “callous and cowardly attack” and we cannot allow such in our society.

We will not allow criminals to operate and feel safe from justice in our communities. This is why you will have seen a more visible policing presence throughout communities, with other efforts being made on the part of the RTCIPF to ensure public safety over the longer term. However, the police cannot do it alone, and this is why the assistance of the public is vital.

If you know or suspect something, in relation to any crime, I urge you to speak up. If you wish to remain anonymous, please call Crime Stoppers on 1-800-8477 or contact the Chalk Sound Police Station via 338-5901.

Mitsubishi eyes Renault-Nissan to grow U.S, China

Mitsubishi will tap new growth in the United States and China by using the Renault-Nissan "toolbox" of products, technologies and factories, top executives said.

Mitsubishi has been unable to gain sufficient traction in the world's two biggest auto markets because it has been short on resources, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Chairman Carlos Ghosn said.

That will be remedied now, Ghosn told reporters at a press conference here Friday in advance of the automaker's annual shareholders meeting.

"A lot of this potential depends on new products," Ghosn said of Mitsubishi's turnaround.

"There are a lot of needs which have not been addressed by Mitsubishi because Mitsubishi doesn't have the technology or doesn't have the segment or did not have the platform."

He said Mitsubishi will lean heavily on resources from the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the global cross-ownership arrangement that struggling Mitsubishi was brought into last year when Nissan took a controlling 34 percent stake in its smaller Japanese rival.

Ghosn promised a V-shaped recovery for Mitsubishi, which saw profits plunge last year amid a scandal over faked fuel economy ratings. That crisis opened the door for Ghosn, who was then joint CEO of Nissan and Renault, to orchestrate the Mitsubishi takeover and appoint himself its chairman.

Its recovery plan has begun by focusing mostly on business in Southeast Asia, where it already has deep roots. But going forward, it will concentrate more on the U.S. and China, Ghosn said. Expanding there is key because of the vast size of both markets.

Ghosn promised results, particularly in China, as early as next year.

"Without any doubt, for me, the potential of development and growth of Mitsubishi in China is very big, and hopefully you will see it immediately, not five years down the road. You're going to see it next year and the year following," said Ghosn, flanked by Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko. "Also, the potential of development of Mitsubishi in the United States is very big."

Neither Ghosn nor Masuko offered details about what lineup holes Mitsubishi needs to plug. But Masuko said electrified vehicles and crossovers will be the focus going ahead, and Ghosn said the alliance intends to commonize EV components to maximize cost and r&d efficiencies.

Masuko also said he hopes to tap the global production network of Renault and Nissan.

Snapchat map update raises safety worries

An update to Snapchat that shows publicly posted images on a searchable map has raised safety concerns among parents.

Snap Map lets people search for places such as schools and see videos and pictures posted by children inside.

It also lets people locate their "friends" on a map that is accurate enough to determine where people live.

Snap, the company behind Snapchat, stressed to the BBC that location sharing was an opt-in feature.

Snap Map was launched on Wednesday and was promoted as a "new way to explore the world".

Video clips and photos that members have posted publicly can be discovered on the map, while members who have chosen to share their location can also be seen on the map by those they have added as "friends".

However, members can add people they have never met to their friends list too.

A message to parents posted by St Peter's Academy in Staffordshire warned that the location-sharing feature lets people "locate exactly where you are, which building you are in and exact whereabouts within the building".

One parent described the update as "dangerous" while another said she could not find the setting to disable it.

People have expressed concern online that the app could be used for stalking or working out exactly where somebody lives.

"If you zoom right in on this new Snapchat map thing it literally tells you where everyone lives? Like exact addresses - bit creepy no?" wrote one user called Leanne.

"This new Snapchat update is awful. An invitation for stalkers, kidnappers, burglars and relationship trust issues," suggested Jade.

Snap told the BBC that accurate location information was necessary to allow friends to use the service to meet, for example at a restaurant or crowded festival, and said points of interest on the map, such as schools, were provided by third-party mapping service Mapbox.

Concerned parents could find out more information on its Privacy Center website, a spokesman told the BBC.

"With Snap Map, location sharing is off by default for all users and is completely optional. Snapchatters can choose exactly who they want to share their location with, if at all, and can change that setting at any time," a Snap spokesman said.

"It's also not possible to share your location with someone who isn't already your friend on Snapchat, and the majority of interactions on Snapchat take place between close friends."
How to switch off Snap Map location sharing

When in photo-taking mode, pinch the screen to open Snap Map
Touch the settings cog in the top right corner of the screen
Tap "Ghost Mode" to switch off location sharing
Photos and videos posted to Snapchat's public 'Our Story' will still be discoverable on the map

Troubled Toshiba flags deeper losses

Ailing electronics giant Toshiba has said its losses for 2016 may be greater than it had previously forecast.

It now predicts a net loss of 995bn yen (£7bn) for the year to March, up from its earlier estimate of 950bn yen.

The firm was demoted to the second tier of the Tokyo Exchange after confirming its liabilities outweighed its assets.

It also got regulatory approval to delay filing its annual earnings again, this time until 10 August, after a previous deadline extension to 30 June.

Failure to gain an extension would have put the troubled company's stock exchange listing in further jeopardy.

In April, Toshiba said its future may be in doubt after facing a series of difficulties.

An accounting scandal that was uncovered in 2015 led to the resignation of the chief executive and several senior managers. The company was found to have inflated the previous seven years' profits by $1.2bn.

The firm was dealt another blow in January when it became clear its US nuclear unit, Westinghouse, was in financial trouble.

Toshibas's dire financial position has forced it to try to sell off its highly prized chip unit.

The company has named a consortium of Bain Capital and Japanese government investors as the preferred bidder for the business

But US-based Western Digital, which jointly runs Toshiba's main chip operations in Japan, has filed a request with the International Court of Arbitration to stop the sale going ahead.

On Friday Toshiba chief executive Satoshi Tsunakawa said his firm was willing to talk.

"Western Digital used to be a good partner, so we want to continue talks. I'm disappointed with the current dispute," he said.

"We want Western Digital to jointly invest to fight against Samsung. It will be so disappointing if we can't do so because of the dispute."

He said Western Digital's offer had not been at the right price and that the US firm had wanted to take control of the unit, rather than keeping Toshiba executives in charge.

Toshiba is the world's second-largest chip manufacturer. Its products are used in data centres and consumer goods worldwide, including iPhones and iPads.

Johnny Depp says "assassination" comment about President Trump was a "bad joke"

Hours after actor Johnny Depp made it sound like he'd be interested in killing President Trump, he's saying he's sorry.

Depp seemingly referenced Abraham Lincoln's assassin, actor John Wilkes Booth, while introducing his new film The Libertine at England's Glastonbury Festival Thursday. Depp asked the crowd, "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?"

He then added, "Maybe it's time."

Following a huge outcry, and a condemnation by the White House, Depp now tells People, "I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump. It did not come out as intended...I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.”

In a statement, the White House said, "President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it's sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead."

The statement added that the White House hoped that "some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democratic elected official."

The actor is just the latest celebrity to level violent words against the president.

Back in January, Madonna told a crowd she "thought a lot about blowing up the White House." She later said she was taken out of context.

Weeks ago, comedienne Kathy Griffin apologized for a photo shoot in which she held a bloodied dummy head made to look like President Trump's.

The Central Park's Shakespeare in the Park retelling of Julius Caesar currently features the title character, dressed like Trump, getting stabbed to death nightly.

Depp's "assassination" message comes weeks after a disgruntled former Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer opened fire on a group of Republican legislators, critically wounding Rep. Steve Scalise.

Bravo, lawyer say CWI failed to follow due process

Estranged West Indies left-hander Darren Bravo has accused Cricket West Indies (CWI) of not affording him due process, in the decision to axe him from the Tri-Series tour of Zimbabwe last November and bar him from future selection.

Breaking his silence for the first time since the controversy erupted eight months ago, the 28-year-old said CWI's only communication with him was to indicate that his contract had been terminated and to inform him of flight details home.

He said no CWI official had sought to engage him on the matter and he found this particularly disappointing since in the past his future was to West Indies cricket.

“Even though you saw a tweet on my Twitter account, no one actually asked me if I did that,” Bravo told Massy United Insurance's Line & Length Network in an exclusive interview set to be aired this weekend.

“I went to sleep the day after the tweet, woke up at 6:30 am trying to get myself ready to head to Zimbabwe for the Tri-Series and all of a sudden I saw two e-mails – one from Roland Holder (CWI cricket operations manager) and one from Richard Pybus (former CWI director of cricket) stating that my contract has been terminated and I was being sent home.

“The other e-mail was from Roland Holder with my flight details but no one actually asked me anything.”

He continued: “I was also given an ultimatum, after being sent home, to take down the tweet by 4:00 pm and apologise on Twitter but at the end of the day no one can prove if Darren Bravo actually went on his Twitter account and tweeted that.

“There was no due process, there wasn't anything. No one asked me anything. Up to this day, no one called me and asked me, so it has been very disappointing.

“Yes, I want to play cricket for West Indies again but at the end of the day, when I step back onto the field, I want to be able to be happy, I want to be able to enjoy my cricket once more and that is probably something I have been lacking for the last year playing for West Indies.”

The impasse arose last November after Bravo rejected a downgraded central contract from CWI and president Dave Cameron subsequently said in a television interview that the player had not merited an enhanced retainer because of his “declining averages” and “poor performances”.

Cameron mistakenly inferred that Bravo had previously held a Grade A contract prompting a Twitter rant from the Trinidadian in which he labelled the Jamaican administrator “a big idiot”.

Barbadian lawyer Donna Symmonds, a member of Bravo's legal team, said her client's rights had been breached and said subsequent attempts to negotiate with CWI had ended in frustration.

CIA knew in August that Putin sought to boost Trump

The CIA had top-level intelligence last August that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally ordered an operation to help Donald Trump win the US presidential race, the Washington Post reported Friday.

The intelligence shocked the White House and put US security chiefs on a top-secret crisis footing to figure out how to react.

But amid confidence that Democrat Hillary Clinton still had the election in the bag and worries over president Barack Obama himself being seen as manipulating the election, the administration delivered warnings to Moscow but left countermeasures until after the vote, the Post reported.

After Trump's shock victory, there were strong regrets among administration officials that they had shied from tough action.

"From national security people there was a sense of immediate introspection, of, 'Wow, did we mishandle this,'" a former administration official told the newspaper.

The Post said that as soon as the intelligence on Putin came in, the White House viewed it as a deep national security threat. A secret intelligence task force was created to firm up the information and come up with possible responses.

They couldn't do anything about embarrassing WikiLeaks revelations from hacked Clinton emails. The focus turned to whether Moscow could disrupt the November 8 vote itself by hacking voter registration lists or voting machines, undermining confidence in the vote tally itself.

Worried about making the situation worse, the administration put off retaliating, and instead delivered stiff warnings directly to the Russians not to go farther.

At least four direct warnings -- Obama to Putin, spy chief to spy chief, and via top diplomatic channels -- appeared to have an impact, officials told the Post. They believe that Moscow pulled back on any possible plans to sabotage US voting operations.

"We made the judgment that we had ample time after the election, regardless of outcome, for punitive measures," a senior administration official told the Post.

Options to retaliate were on the table early: more crippling sanctions on the Russian economy, leaking information that would embarrass Putin diplomatically, and launching cyberattacks on Russian infrastructure were high on the list.

But Trump's shock victory dampened the response.

Obama took modest measures at the end of December, expelling 35 Russians and adding to existing sanctions. He also, according to the Post, authorised a plan to place cyberattack implants in the systems of critical Russian infrastructure. But it remains unclear, the Post said, whether Trump has followed through with that.
