Dominican troops reinforce border as Haitians try to return

The Dominican Republic has sent hundreds of soldiers to its border with Haiti to make it harder for migrants without legal residency to enter the country after returning home to spend the holidays.

A contingent of 900 troops was dispatched as part of what officials are calling "Operation Shield." They were joining about 1,200 soldiers already assigned to patrol the area that divides the island of Hispaniola.

The deployment announced Tuesday is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. Last year, the government issued residency permits to 184,000 people who could prove they had been living in the country since before October 2011.

An estimated 300,000 are thought to be in the country without legal status. Officials have warned that anyone without legal residency may face deportation.

Jamaican faces flak after ‘disrespectful’ comments to TV reporter

The Big Bash League has blasted comments by Chris Gayle made to a female reporter during a live television interview as “disrespectful and simply inappropriate”, and says it will be meeting with the West Indies star over the matter.

Following his explosive 41 for Melbourne Renegades yesterday at the Bellerive Oval here, Gayle openly flirted with Network TEN’s Mel McLaughlin during the interview, telling her: “I wanted to have an interview with you as well, that’s why I’m here.”

He added: “I get to see your eyes for the first time, it’s nice. Hopefully we can win and go for a drink after.”

“Don’t blush baby.”

However, BBL head Anthony Everard said Gayle’s behaviour had no place in the glitzy Twenty20 tournament.

“I heard Chris’s comments and they’re disrespectful and simply inappropriate. We’ll certainly be talking to him and the Renegades about it,” Everard said.

“This league is all about its appeal to kids, families and females. There’s just no place in the BBL – or, for that matter, cricket anywhere – for that sort of behaviour.”

The Renegades franchise also condemned Gayle’s remarks, echoing similar sentiments to those of the BBL head.

“I heard Chris’s comments and we agree with both Cricket Australia and Channel TEN that they’re disrespectful and simply inappropriate,” “Renegades chief executive, Stuart Coventry, said.

“We’ll certainly be talking to him in association with Cricket Australia about it. The Melbourne Renegades is all about its appeal to kids, families and females. There’s just no place for that sort of behaviour.”

Channel TEN subsequently announced they would be dropping Gayle as an interview option.

“We won’t be using [Gayle] in the game anymore,” Channel TEN’s head of sport David Barham said. “Unless things change in the next few days, it’s not happening.”

Renegades Captain Aaron Finch, with whom Gayle shared a sizzling 84-run, first-wicket partnership off 36 balls to set up Monday’s win over Hobart Hurricanes, said the Jamaican had apologised to McLaughlin.

“Chris has apologised to Mel. As an organisation we don’t condone it,” Finch said following the five-wicket win.

“Between Chris and everyone else, they’ve addressed it… he’s apologised.”

CARIBBEAN TOURISM ORGANIZATION DECLARES 2016 'THE YEAR OF ROMANCE IN THE CARIBBEAN'

With the start of the New Year comes the launch of a new initiative by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) - 2016 The Year of Romance in the Caribbean - which celebrates everything romantic about the region. Through the campaign, CTO and its member countries and hotels will highlight the Caribbean as the leading choice for a romance vacation for consumers and travel planners selling the region.

"With over 30 destinations to choose from, the Caribbean region provides the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway highlighted by pristine beaches, secluded accommodations, an abundance of land and water activities, top-notch spa services and personalized attention that meets the needs of the most discerning traveler," said Hugh Riley, secretary general of CTO. "The Year of Romance in the Caribbean will spotlight the romantic features of our region beyond the traditional times of year such as Valentine's Day. A romantic theme is easily embraced by all of our member destinations 365 days a year," Riley noted.

Throughout the year, CTO, in cooperation with its private sector partner the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA), will assist member countries with an assortment of ideas which can be implemented around the theme of romance to appeal to consumers, travel agents and tour operators. Innovative ideas will be developed around:
♥ First-time or second-time marriages and the renewal of vows
♥ The most romantic locations to "pop the question" or to say "I do"
♥ Inviting celebrity couples to get married in the Caribbean
♥ Revisits by couples who were married or honeymooned in the Caribbean
♥ Couples celebrating milestone anniversaries
♥ Gift registries of romantic vacations in the Caribbean

"We anticipate that in addition to the ideas we provide our members, the countries and hotels will develop their own plan of action for promoting romance in their individual destinations," said Riley adding: "The theme is inclusive of our partners, both public- and private-sector. Caribbean hotels, travel agents and tour operators are urged to create their own romantic ideas or adopt ones being embraced by the destinations. We envision airline partners getting involved with their own 'love is in the air' offers and recognizing bridal parties onboard who are heading to a destination wedding in the Caribbean. We think video bloggers too will get involved in featuring the winners of the most romantic ideas."

CTO envisions 2016 The Year of Romance in the Caribbean as a catalyst for sellers and promoters of weddings and honeymoons, bridal publications and websites as well as wedding planners and service providers at the destination end.
2016 The Year of Romance in the Caribbean will be promoted through social media and traditional media channels and will create opportunities for travelers and vacation planners to share their experiences and ideas of a romantic Caribbean vacation throughout 2016.

Camille Cosby Looks to Delay Her Deposition

Lawyers for Bill Cosby's wife, Camille, have filed an emergency motion to delay her Jan. 6 deposition in a civil suit against her husband.

On New Year's Eve, a magistrate rejected their arguments to quash the deposition altogether, and now, they want more time to prepare a legal brief appealing the decision.

Cosby was sued by seven women who claimed that he "drugged and/or sexually assaulted each" of them. Lawyers subpoenaed Camille Cosby in early December.

Cosby filed a counter-defamation lawsuit on Dec. 14 and his legal team has repeatedly denied the accusations.

Attorneys for Camille Cosby, who has been married to the comedian since 1964, have argued, in part, that Massachusetts law aims to preserve “the confidentiality of marital communications." They also argued that a stay is necessary because the “plaintiffs have indicated that they intend to disclose Mrs. Cosby’s deposition testimony, including her private marital conversations to the press,” according to court documents.

Cosby is facing a charge of aggravated indecent assault, stemming from an alleged incident in 2004. He did not enter a plea and after appearing in a Pennsylvania courtroom, was released on $1 million bail.

If convicted, Cosby faces up to 10 years in jail and a $25,000 fine. He is due back in court later this month.

"The charge by the Montgomery County District Attorney's office came as no surprise, filed 12 years after the alleged incident and coming on the heels of a hotly contested election for this county's DA during which this case was made the focal point," Cosby's legal team said in a statement about the criminal charges. "Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law."
