Bermudians voting for new government
Bermudians are casting their ballots for a new government on Tuesday with the two main political parties confident of winning the election that Premier David Burt called 10 months ahead of the constitutional deadline
In the 2020 snap elections, the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) won 30 of the 36 seats with the remainder going to the main opposition One Bermuda Alliance (OBA).
The Parliamentary Registry Office (PRO) said that all polling stations opened at 8.00 am (local time)and will close 12 hours later.
“Registered voters are strongly encouraged to verify their registration details and polling station locations…to ensure a smooth voter experience and to avoid any delays,” it said, adding that registered voters are reminded to bring valid identification to the polling station.
The PRO said that acceptable forms of ID include a passport, Bermuda driver’s license, Special Persons Card, Voter Identification Card, or an employee identification card with a photo, signature, and date of birth.
It said voters, when entering a polling station are not permitted, helmets, cameras, cellphones, video, or any other electronic device with a camera and that employers are being reminded that “workers are entitled to time off from work to vote.
109 candidates are contesting the elections with both the PLP and the OBA having named candidates to contest all 36 seats. There are 26 independents
The PLP is urging voters to return the party to office with Premier Burt saying the country has a choice to make that would have implications for the next few years and future generations.
Burt, who has indicated that he will not be contesting another general election, said that his government is committed to fairness and not “just platitudes”.
He acknowledged the island’s general discontent with the cost of living, saying Bermuda is at the mercy of global economic tides but his party would work to soften the blow.
OBA leader, Jarion Richardson, said he hopes his political legacy will be that he stepped up when others were giving up on the Opposition.
“We shouldn’t wait for a crisis to come together. This election is about rebuilding our country as one. Let’s move forward. Let’s restore opportunity,” the party has told voters.

DeepSeek 'shared user data' with TikTok owner ByteDance
South Korea has accused Chinese AI startup DeepSeek of sharing user data with the owner of TikTok in China.
"We confirmed DeepSeek communicating with ByteDance," the South Korean data protection regulator told Yonhap News Agency.
The country had already removed DeepSeek from app stores over the weekend over data protection concerns.
The Chinese app caused shockwaves in the AI world in January, wiping billions off global stock markets over claims its new model was trained at a much lower cost than US rivals such as ChatGPT.
Since then, multiple countries have warned that user data may not be properly protected, and in February a US cybersecurity company alleged potential data sharing between DeepSeek and ByteDance.
DeepSeek's apparent overnight impact saw it shoot to the top of App Store charts in the UK, US and many other countries around the world - although it now sits far below ChatGPT in UK rankings.
In South Korea, it had been downloaded over a million times before being pulled from Apple and Google's App Stores on Saturday evening.
Existing users can still access the app and use it on a web browser.
The data regulator, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), told South Korea's Yonhap News Agency that despite finding a link between DeepSeek and ByteDance, it was "yet to confirm what data was transferred and to what extent".
Critics of the Chinese state have long argued its National Intelligence Law allows the government to access any data it wants from Chinese companies.
However, ByteDance, headquartered in Beijing, is owned by several global investors - and others say the same law allows for the protection of private companies and personal data.
Fears over user data being sent to China were one of the reasons the US Supreme Court upheld a ban on TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance.
The US ban is on hold until 5 April as President Donald Trump attempts to broker a resolution.

Delta plane crashes, overturns in Toronto; all survive, officials say
A Delta flight crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday and the plane was seen upside-down on the snow-covered ground.
Eighteen passengers have been taken to hospitals, the airline said.
Peel Regional Paramedic Services said none of the injuries were considered to be life-threatening. Three people suffered critical injuries -- one child, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s -- according to Ornge, which provides medical transport. Among the others, 12 people have mild injuries.
The 76 passengers and four crew on board Flight 4819 have been evacuated following the single-aircraft accident, according to Delta and the Federal Aviation Administration. The flight originated in Minneapolis.
What caused the plane to flip and catch fire was not immediately clear but the investigation is already underway, sources told ABC News. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will lead the investigation, the FAA said. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are assisting.

SZA and Kendrick Lamar make Billboard chart history following Super Bowl
Super Bowl halftime performers don't get paid directly, but the exposure usually boosts their entire catalog. That's what SZA and Kendrick Lamar are finding out now.
As Billboard notes, Kendrick's album GNX has returned to #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and SZA's album SOS has returned to #2. This marks the first time two performers from the year's Super Bowl halftime show have taken the #1 and #2 spots on the chart, following their halftime collaborations on "Luther" and "All the Stars."
As per Billboard, the last time a Super Bowl halftime performer was #1 following a performance was back in 2018, when Justin Timberlake's album Man of the Woods debuted at #1. It was released two days before he headlined the Super Bowl that year on Feb. 4.
Meanwhile, Kendrick makes history himself: Billboard reports that he's now the first living male artist to have at least three albums in the top 10 since 1966 when Herb Alpert and his band the Tijuana Brass did it. Prince had three albums in the top 10 in May of 2016, but that came following his death on April 21.
Of course, if you want more SZA and K.Dot, the two will launch their co-headlining Grand National Tour of stadiums on April 19 in Minneapolis.

Kemuel Cox creates Valentine waves from South Caicos with 'Diamond Girl'
Rising Star Kemuel Cox is making a name for himself in the music industry with his authentic, relatable songs and unique sound that blends cultural influences with personal experiences. Hailing from the beautiful island of South Caicos, Kemuel has always had a passion for music, and it shows in the work he’s been producing since he was just 13 years old. His journey as a young recording artist has been one of growth, creativity, and resilience.
Speaking with RTC's Chris Jarrett, Cox shared, “I’m a very friendly, approachable, and open-minded individual,” says Kemuel. “I’ve always kept my head up and never let life’s burdens hinder me. Music has always been one of my core passions, and it’s my way of expressing my thoughts, feelings, and experiences.”
Kemuel’s journey in music began in 2020 when he first started writing and producing his own songs. It was around this time that he began experimenting with different genres and discovering his unique style. In 2023, he released his first-ever rake and scrape song, “Why You Marry Me,” which marked a significant shift in his musical journey.
“I had never officially produced a rake and scrape song before, and it was a new environment for me,” he explains. “I was still a young producer in high school, and I had struggled with other genres of music, so I decided to take a more cultural approach and try something new.”
The inspiration behind “Why You Marry Me” came from Kemuel’s extended playlist, which he had started in 2022. The song, released for Regatta, speaks to the pain and heartbreak that often follows love.
Kemuel’s second song, “Nosy Neighbor,” takes a deeper dive into the everyday culture of the community. “It was inspired by how quickly news spreads, especially from the people you thought you could trust,” he shares. “I wanted to capture that feeling of betrayal and the chaos that comes with it.”
But it’s his third release, “Diamond Girl,” that may be the most personal yet. A Valentine’s Day release, the song expresses Kemuel’s feelings for someone he’s grown particularly fond of. He describes it as a tribute to a “diamond” level of womanhood, something rare and special in today’s world. The song, like all of Kemuel’s work, is filled with raw emotion and sincerity.
“Music is my way of expressing myself,” says Kemuel. “I write down whatever comes to mind and let the lyrics flow naturally. It takes time to create something truly great, and I never rush the process. I want to make sure I’m expressing the right message in every song.”
Kemuel’s journey has not been without its challenges, but he remains determined to continue growing as an artist. “I didn’t start producing hit songs overnight. I failed a couple of times before I got the hang of it,” he admits. “Persistence is key, and I truly believe that under pressure, diamonds are formed.”
Fans can find Kemuel’s music across his social media platforms, including his YouTube channel, “Kemz Studios,” Instagram (@kemz_studios_2.0), and Facebook. He encourages his supporters to follow his journey and offers encouragement to others looking to pursue their dreams.
“Never be afraid to express yourself,” he says. “Find a comfortable way for you, like I did with music, and keep working toward your goals. No matter what, stay focused and stay tuned for what’s to come.”
Cox thanked RTC for the support over the years, for releasing his songs, and for showing love to local artists.

Trump's Plan to Make European Cars More Expensive Has a Flaw
President Trump’s threat of 25 percent tariffs on EU car imports could spark an automotive trade war—one that will result in higher prices for all and will never end in European consumers buying more American autos.
PRESIDENT TRUMP WANTS Americans to buy fewer European cars and Europeans to buy more American cars. To speed his pipe dream along, on Sunday night he said that new tariffs on EU companies would “definitely happen.” (The ones he announced on Mexico and Canada have been stayed for now.) His threat of 25 percent tariffs on, among other things, car imports from the EU could spark an automotive trade war.
Market reaction to this was predictable: European automaker shares fell yesterday. Stellantis and Volkswagen were down 6.8 and 5.6 percent, respectively. Volvo fell by 6.5 percent, while Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Porsche lost between 3.6 and 4.3 percent.
Despite his Bavarian ancestry, Trump has a special beef with German cars. In a 2018 report from the German magazine WirtschaftsWoche, Trump told French president Emmanuel Macron that he wanted no more Mercedes rolling down New York’s Fifth Avenue. And, according to several unnamed European and US diplomats, Trump also asked Macron why so Germans buy so few Chevrolets yet American drivers choose BMWs.
The accuracy of this conversation was confirmed in November when former German chancellor Angela Merkel told Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera that Trump was “obsessed with the idea that there were too many German cars in New York.” Trump's might well have been among them, as the European cars the president has owned apparently include a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Lamborghini Diablo, and Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
It’s an odd obsession because a Mercedes-Benz spotted by Trump rolling down Fifth Avenue will likely have been made in Alabama. There are mammoth BMW and Volkswagen factories in the US, too, building big cars tailored to US tastes.
Trump has demanded that overseas auto companies must henceforth manufacture in the United States seemingly oblivious to the fact that since the 1990s millions of cars have been made in America by European brands—especially German ones.
Volkswagen said last year it is investing $10 billion in the US, split between its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant and a joint venture with EV maker Rivian. South Carolina has the largest BMW assembly plant in the world—it made 396,000 automobiles there last year—and has been so successful over 30 years that BMW’s global CEO, Oliver Zipse, recently received an economic award from the state’s Republican governor.
Porsche and Daimler also build vehicles in the US. German automaker plants in Alabama, South Carolina, Texas, and other Trump-voting states directly employ some 50,000 American workers, with yet more employed by parts suppliers, dealerships, and service centers.
“To make any distinction between what is an American car and what is a German car is nonsense," says Jacob Kirkegaard, a European trade expert with the Washington, DC-based Peterson Institute for International Economics.
There’s also an increased international comingling of car brands. Chrysler, historically one of the Big Three US automakers alongside GM and Ford, was bought by Fiat of Italy and, since 2021, has been part of the Amsterdam-headquartered Stellantis group, which owns the supposedly all-American brands Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Trucks.
Also, imposing tariffs on European cars won’t supercharge Trump’s plans for US automakers to sell more cars in Europe, experts say. Kirkegaard says putting hefty tariffs on any part of the auto industry could lead to price hikes globally.
“This is an industry that has very, very long supply chains,” Kirkegaard says. “The imposition of further tariffs on the auto industry would severely disrupt those supply chains.”
Nevertheless, Trump is right about an imbalance in car sales between Europe and the US. The EU currently levies a 10 percent tariff on car imports, while the US imposes 2.5 percent. The US is the number one export destination for EU-made cars. In 2023, European car manufacturers exported $58 billion worth of vehicles and components to the US, accounting for 20 percent of the EU’s total automotive export value and supporting almost 14 million European jobs. Because of their greater reliance on US sales, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Stellantis are the most threatened by Trump’s tariff weaponization.
Trump’s threat to raise the tariff to 25 percent, making imported European cars significantly less competitive against American and non-EU alternatives, could dent car sales overall forcing automakers to reduce investment globally, and this could lead to workforce culls or plant closures in the US.
Nor will European consumers buy more American cars anytime soon. It might hurt Trump to learn this, but European consumers aren’t overly fussed about US-made cars, especially gas-powered ones. While SUVs now account for half of all European auto sales (note that these SUVs are smaller than the ones made in the US), these are primarily manufactured in the EU because European consumers prefer EU-built internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
The reason? These EU-built models are generally safer than US-built cars because of more demanding EU safety standards and, because of stricter emissions regulations, they also tend to have cleaner engines. Europe’s ICE cars also tend to be more fuel-efficient, making them cheaper to run, a key sales benefit in countries where gas is not as subsidized as it is in the US.
Tesla sales are now dropping off a cliff in France, Germany, and Sweden—being lampooned as Swasticars is boosting this vertiginous fall from grace—but for the last several years the company has dominated EU sales of electric cars, although that’s via the firm’s vanilla offerings. The discordant Cybertruck falls foul of multiple EU safety rules and therefore can't be sold in Europe, even if European consumers wanted such truck in the first place. And according to Clarissa Hahn, an automotive economist at the London-based consulting firm Oxford Economics, they don’t: “Most Europeans don’t want to buy Tesla Cybertrucks or other huge SUVs, as they're simply not suited to European tastes.”
American automakers mostly make autos for Americans. For the likes of GM and others, there’s little tailoring to a non-US audience. Ford’s F150 might shine in America, but large trucks aren’t anywhere near as popular in Europe, where city roads are narrower and parking spaces smaller.

Musk-led group makes $97.4bn bid for ChatGPT maker OpenAI
A consortium of investors led by Elon Musk offered $97.4bn to take over OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.
The billionaire's attorney, Marc Toberoff, confirmed he submitted the bid for "all assets" of the tech company to its board on Monday.
The offer is the latest twist in a longstanding battle between Musk, the world's richest man and right hand to US President Donald Trump, and Open AI chief executive Sam Altman over the future of the start-up at the centre of the AI boom.
In response to the bid, Altman posted on Musk's social media platform X: "no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."
OpenAI is widely credited with helping bring artificial intelligence tools into the mainstream and sparking huge investment in the sector.
Musk and Altman co-founded the start-up in 2015 as a non-profit company, but the relationship has soured since the Tesla and X boss departed the firm in 2018.
Altman is said to be restructuring the company to become a for-profit entity, stripping it of its non-profit board - a move Musk argues means the company has abandoned its founding mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.
But OpenAI argues its transition into a for-profit firm is required to secure the money needed for developing the best artificial intelligence models.
The bid to take over OpenAI bid is being backed by Musk's AI company xAI, as well as several private equity firms, including Baron Capital Group and Valor Management.
"It's time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was. We will make sure that happens," Musk said in a statement.
The offer tabled at $97.4bn is much lower than the $157bn the company was valued at in its latest funding round in October last year. Talks over a further funding round reportedly value it now at $300bn.
In a statement, Mr Toberoff said the consortium would be "prepared to consider matching or exceeding" any potential higher bid.
"As the co-founder of OpenAI and the most innovative and successful tech industry leader in history, Musk is the person best positioned to protect and grow OpenAI's technology," Musk's attorney added on his behalf and other investors.
The creator of ChatGPT is also teaming up with another US tech giant, Oracle, along with a Japanese investment firm and an Emirati sovereign wealth fund to build $500bn of artificial intelligence infrastructure in the US.
The new company, called The Stargate Project, was announced at the White House by President Donald Trump who billed it "the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history" and said it would help keep "the future of technology" in the US.
Musk, despite being a top advisor to Trump, has claimed the venture does not "actually have the money" it has pledged to invest, though he has also not provided any details or substantiation for the comments.
