Alex Rodriguez walks out of MLB’s arbitration hearing
Alex Rodriguez’s future in baseball is more uncertain than ever after a theatrical day in which he punched a wall, pounded his fist on a table, told Major League Baseball chief operating officer Rob Manfred that the process is “f------ bulls---,” and stormed out of his doping arbitration.
And he wasn’t finished.
A couple of hours later, A-Rod took to the radio to castigate Bud Selig and proclaim his innocence in the Biogenesis scandal, denying publicly for the first time (albeit not under oath) that he took the performance-enhancing drugs MLB says he took in what it has described as the most egregious doping case in baseball history.
"Did you do any PEDs?" host Mike Francesa asked.
"No," Rodriguez said.
He added that he had “missed my daughter's birthday, first time; she's 9 on Monday. I was here, and I wasn't there for Natasha.”
“You're saying you did nothing wrong, you did not do what they're accusing you of doing?” asked Francesa.
“That's correct,” Rodriguez said.
Wearing a dark gray suit and polka-dot tie on the YES simulcast, Rodriguez described himself as persecuted by Major League Baseball and undermined by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz’s ruling that MLB had properly designated Manfred as the representative who explained the penalties the league imposed rather than Selig.
“Today I lost my mind,” Rodriguez said. “I banged a table, kicked a briefcase and slammed out of the room.”
He went on to attack the 79-year-old Selig, who lives in Milwaukee and whose office is there.
“I know you don’t like New York, but you’ve got to come face me,” Rodriguez said of the commissioner. “This is my legacy. I’m part of history. You tell me why I should serve one inning. 'Cause you’re retiring next year? That’s not fair, Mike."
“This has been a disgusting process for everyone,” said Rodriguez, who told Francesa he had been prepared to testify Friday if Selig took the stand on Thursday.
“This should end with Selig on Thursday and me on Friday,” he said. “Put your money where your mouth is. ... Let the arbiter decide whatever he decides.”
MLB spokesman Pat Courtney told the Daily News that MLB has the right under the collective bargaining agreement to select the person it wants to use as a witness to explain the penalty the league has settled on in a doping case.
"In the entire history of the Joint Drug Agreement, the commissioner has not testified in a single case,” Courtney said in a statement. “Major League Baseball has the burden of proof in this matter. MLB selected Rob Manfred as its witness to explain the penalty imposed in this case. Mr. Rodriguez and the Players’ Association have no right to dictate how baseball's case is to proceed any more than baseball has the right to dictate how their case proceeds. Today's antics are an obvious attempt to justify Mr. Rodriguez's continuing refusal to testify under oath."
Denying that he used doping products supplied by Biogenesis and interfered with MLB’s investigation of the Miami anti-aging clinic, Rodriguez told Francesa that he deserved to play for the Yankees on Opening Day — but that he was through with arbitration.
"For me, I'm done," Rodriguez said. "I don't have a chance."

Lara baffled by Dwayne Bravo, Narine snub
Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has questioned the decision by selectors to ignore Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine for the Test leg of West Indies' tour of India.
Lara has described Bravo as having equal or stronger credentials as an all-rounder than West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who made only 25 runs in the series and went wicketless.
The cricket legend says he is also baffled at Narine's omission, describing the latter as the best spinner in Caribbean first-class cricket.
"I don't need any confirmation from Sammy, I know for a fact that his confidence was shattered and he started to wonder what's going to happen next," said Lara, writing in his column for the Times of India.
"Well, what we saw in the Test series is a result of this chain of events. A captain that looked lost on the field and his personal display especially with the bat, was one even he would like to forget."
West Indies crashed to innings defeats inside three days in their two Test matches against India.
"A more baffling omission is Sunil Narine, the most successful bowler in West Indies regional four-day cricket," Lara said.
"You would think that he knows Indian pitches like the back of his hand. Another one of world's best cricketers labelled by our selectors as not good enough."
According to Lara the selectors had benched the wrong people and the consequences had badly hurt the team.
"What about the Test squad selected for this tour? The very day that Sammy was elected as captain of the team it made it very difficult for someone like Dwayne Bravo to be considered,"wrote Lara.
"Dwayne hasn't played Test cricket for about three years now and knowing him closely it pains him that the selectors seem to only require him for the shorter versions of the game".
Germany consign England to another home defeat
Germany procured a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory over England in a friendly at Wembley yesterday, consigning their old rivals to successive home defeats for the first time since 1977.
The sides' first meeting since Germany's bruising 4-1 win in the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was decided by a 39th-minute header from Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker.
Roy Hodgson's England had opportunities to equalise, notably when Andros Townsend hit the post in the second half, but after Friday's 2-0 loss to Chile at the same venue, they end the year with a pair of defeats.
Germany have now won on their last six visits to England — including a penalty shoot-out success at Euro 96 — and will look ahead to 2014 with their status as serious World Cup contenders intact if not enhanced by a polished but unspectacular performance.
Both sides made wholesale changes to their starting XIs — nine for England, eight for Germany — but while the hosts welcomed back several first-choice players, the visitors' line-up was more experimental.
Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller was awarded a first cap, while Borussia Moenchengladbach's Max Kruse led the newcomers, and England seemed eager to exploit any unfamiliarity in their opponents' ranks.
Their final ball frequently let them down, however, and after Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Phil Jagielka had all failed to find the target with attempts at goal, Germany came to life.
Joe Hart had been enjoying a quiet night on his first appearance since Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Chelsea last month, but in the 38th minute he showed sharp reflexes to keep out a header from Mertesacker and then block Kruse's follow-up.
Respite was brief though, as within seconds Mertesacker leapt to meet Toni Kroos's cross from the right and directed a towering header inside the England goalkeeper's right-hand post from 15 yards out.
Ronaldo hat-trick propels Portugal to Brazil
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick as Portugal survived a second-half scare to qualify for their fourth straight World Cup final with a 3-2 play-off second leg win against Sweden yesterday to qualify 4-2 on aggregate.
The Real Madrid superstar scored all four of his side's goals, including the first-leg winner as he overcame an equally brilliant display from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a classic encounter at Solna.
Ibrahimovic scored both goals for Sweden in vain as the match featured five goals in 29 minutes of second-half madness.
Ronaldo also becomes Portugal's all-time leading scorer as he took his tally to 50, and three ahead of retired forward Pedro Pauleta.
With Portugal leading 1-0 after the first-leg and the match scoreless at half-time, Ronaldo turned the game on its head five minutes after the restart when he latched onto a glorious through ball from Joao Moutinho and guided a left-foot shot past the despairing Andreas Isaksson.
The counter-attack that began inside the Portuguese penalty area, took just two touches to send the former Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United striker free on a break that went the length of the pitch.
Sweden were left facing the daunting prospect of scoring three times in 40 minutes and roused the crowd into a frenzy when Ibrahimovic headed home Kim Kallstrom's corner with 22 minutes remaining.
The packed crowd at the Friends Arena were given further hope four minutes later when English referee Howard Webb correctly awarded a free kick to Sweden just outside the area which Ibrahimovic drilled low past Rui Patricio.
With a wave of yellow shirts bombarding the Portuguese defence, Ronaldo again came to the rescue with two goals in two minutes, both of them clinical finishes after breaking behind the defence.
Hugo Almeida set up Portugal's third goal which took the sting out of the crowd before another perfect pass from Moutinho enabled Ronaldo to round Isaksson before smashing the ball in off the underside of the bar.
Portugal had the better of the first-half chances with Ronaldo twice blasting over from inside the box and Bruno Alves seeing his glancing header desperately pushed away by Isaksson.
However, Sweden kept at the task at hand with Ibrahimovic turning a close-range shot over the bar and Kallstrom's rasping long-range shot well collected by Rui Patricio.
The stage was then set for a second-half of thrilling action and Ronaldo's battle with Ibrahmivic which was finally won by the Portuguese.
Meanwhile in Paris, France put up a superb performance to bounce back from a 2-0 play-off first-leg defeat to beat Ukraine 3-0 in the second leg to book their ticket to Brazil 3-2 on aggregate.

Levine tipped as Sexiest Man Alive
The coach to Tessane Chin on NBC’s the Voice, is allegedly tipped to be named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive next week.
But Adam Levine is remaining tight-lipped about the rumors.
The 34-year-old refused to confirm or deny the reports during an interview with Savannah Guthrie on the NBC Today show on Friday.
"I don't believe you," he told the morning show host when she asked him about the rumours, before saying, "It's an interesting idea."
The singer has appeared in the Sexiest Man Alive issue but never as the number one pick.
This year's top choice will be announced by the magazine on November 20.
Last year's pick was actor Channing Tatum, preceded by Bradley Cooper in 2011.
Tessanne Chin in top 8
Jamaicans breathed a sigh of relief last night as Tessanne Chin made it into the top eight on the NBC televised talent show, The Voice.
There were nervous moments as her name was the fifth of the eight to be called during the live elimination show.
Chin showed clear signs of nerves as both her Adam Levine-coached teammates, James Wolpert and Will Champlin, were among the early finalists.
The announcement of her name by host Carson Daly left Chin visibly relieved and elicited wild cheers inside the Universal Studios, from where the show is broadcast.
The live audience included Chin's father Richard and sister Tami.
A confident Chin later took to the stage with fellow competitor Caroline Pennell for a performance of Royals by Lorde.
The other contestants who joined Chin for next week's performance round are: Matthew Schuler, Ray Boudreaux, Jacquie Lee, Cole Vosbury, and Caroline Pennell who was saved by live votes on Twitter.
The acts eliminated were Austin Jenckes and Kat Robichaud.
On Monday night, Chin delivered a standout performance of Gladys Knight's If I Were Your Woman in front of a live studio audience which included male Athlete of the Year and sprint king, Jamaican Usain Bolt, who was in Los Angeles to promote his book.
Bolt attended the televised talent show to lend support to his fellow Jamaican.
Reports put the American television audience for Monday's show at just over 10 million viewers.
Following Chin's performance on Monday night, her coach, Levine, noted that he was happy to have talked her into performing the soul music classic as her delivery solidified her as a major contender for the title.

Walt Disney's daughter, Diane Disney Miller, dies
The eldest daughter of Walt Disney, Diane Disney Miller, who inspired him to build the first Disneyland theme park, has died aged 79.
The Walt Disney Co confirmed she died at her California home on Tuesday, due to complications from a fall.
The company's CEO Robert Iger said she would be remembered for "her grace and generosity and tireless work to preserve her father's legacy".
Miller founded the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco in 2009.
"As the beloved daughter of Walt Disney and one of his inspirations for creating Disneyland, she holds a special place in the history of The Walt Disney Co and in the hearts of fans everywhere," said Iger in a statement.
Miller was born to Walt and Lillian Disney on 18 December, 1933 and, the next day, The Los Angeles Times declared: "Mickey Mouse has a daughter."
She remembered her father as a man who was caring and patient with his children.
"He'd take me and my sister Sharon to the merry-go-round at Griffith Park and stand there all day waiting until we were ready to go," she told the San Francisco Chronicle in 1998.
"As he stood there, he kept thinking there should be more for parents and children to do together, and the idea for Disneyland was born."
Miller is survived by her husband, Ronald, who owns the Silverado Vineyards Winery in Napa Valley, as well as seven children and 13 grandchildren. Her younger sister, Sharon, died of cancer in 1993.
In San Francisco she was involved in Bay Area arts organizations and was on the board of the San Francisco Symphony.
Miller played a key role in the completion of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, which was started with a $50 million (£31m) gift from her mother and designed by Frank Gehry.
Project leaders such as Richard Riordan, the mayor at the time, and billionaire Eli Broad felt Gehry's firm lacked the experience to execute the plans for the building's unusual curved polished steel design.
However Miller disagreed and, at a crucial point in 1997, threatened to withhold around $20 million (£12.5m) that still remained of her mother's gift, if Gehry was not kept on.
"I wanted something that would bear my father's name, that would come from his wealth but not be commercial," Miller told the Los Angeles Times in September, not long before her fall, as she chaired a gala commemorating the building's 10th anniversary.
She added: "I think we achieved that."
