LeBron James won't be union prez
After talking with advisors and fellow players, Lebron James has decided not to run for president of the National Basketball Players' Association, sources told ESPN.com.
James told ESPN last week he was considering running for the position, which came open this summer when Derek Fisher’s 's term expired. According to a source, James may instead support the possible candidacy of Miami Heat teammate James Jones, who is currently the treasurer of the union.
USA Today first reported James would not seek the position.
The union, which is holding its summer meeting in Las Vegas next week, is currently in flux with no executive director and no president. Fisher and former head Billy Hunter are involved in a legal battle over Hunter's firing for misuse of union money.
"I just the think the union is going backwards and it's not in a good place right now," James said last week. "I think my voice could be huge in that situation. But I'm not sure I have the time to do it but it's something I'm going to think about with my team and go from there. But I think we all can agree there's been a lot of transition in our union in the last couple of years. If it's not me in that seat then I hope it's someone who is comfortable with it and can do the job."
James has gotten more involved in union business over the last two years. He attended some bargaining sessions during the 2011 lockout and then spoke up at a meeting over All-Star Weekend last season when Hunter's fate was decided.

It turns out that Oprah Winfrey and Chaka Khan are not the only high-profile celebs who have given Lindsay Lohan moral support. According to TMZ, during her 90-day rehab stint, LiLo got a surprise visit from actor and director Ben Affleck, who went through alcohol rehab in 2001.
The "Armageddon" actor reportedly gave her guidance on how to maintain sobriety post-rehab and even to make a great comeback in Hollywood. Sources with the knowledge tell the site that the meeting, which took place somewhere away from the Cliffside rehab facility where she was treated, "really touched" the 27-year-old actress and singer.
TMZ adds that there was no talk about "Live by Night", Affleck's next directorial gig in which Lohan reportedly has been in talks to play a waitress with a heart of gold. The rumor, however, has been shut down by a source close to the production.
"It's not true," the source told US Weekly last July. "First off, no one has been cast. [Lohan] will not be cast in any role in the movie. She is not being considered for any role in the movie. She won't be in the movie."
Lohan will next be seen in the August 18 episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter", airing at 9/8c on OWN. Her latest movie, "The Canyons", is currently playing at theaters.

Alleged Bar Brawl Victim Plans to Sue Justin Bieber
Last week, Justin Bieber's entourage allegedly beat down a South Pointe nightclub patron and left him bloody and bruised on the club parking lot. The teen heartthrob's name has not been dragged into the case until the said victim revealed his own version of what happened that Sunday night. According to TMZ, he now plans to sue the "All Around the World" hitmaker.
Wayne Rennalls, the alleged victim, held a press conference in Bay Shore on Friday, August 9. The 22-year-old man said that Bieber also participated in the "four to five minutes" beating which could cost him his work as a model for Worldwide Agency. Rennalls claimed that the heated exchange was sparked by "jealousy" over chicks the Biebs had his eyes on.
Rennalls said that Bieber was shining a flashlight at some girls he wished to join his crew. "I got a group of females, like seven on this [left] side and three on this side [right] and one standing behind me. The girls I was with, none of them ran to him," he recalled, as cited by NY Daily News.
The chaos started when Rennalls approached a waitress Bieber was flirting with at that time. He intended to ask back the bow tie she borrowed from him, but it apparently annoyed the young superstar.
"Justin Bieber [was] still running his mouth and I took my shirt off to fight," Rennalls claimed. "That's when they all hopped out of the truck and bum-rushed me. They said, 'That's your ****ing a**,' and the first one came to me, and I put my hands up to fight, to protect myself. He [Bieber] got around and kicked me."
Police investigation is currently underway, and Bieber's reps have not made a statement regarding the said accusation.

Hollywood on course for biggest summer box office in 2013
Hollywood is on course for its biggest ever summer box office in the US despite several high profile flops.
Big budget films The Lone Ranger, Will Smith's After Earth and animation Turbo all hugely underperformed in America.
However figures show studio films have earned $4.1bn (£2.6bn), close to 2011's previous high of $4.4bn (£2.8bn).
Sci-fi Elysium, from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, topped this week's North American chart earning $30.5m (£19.7m) in its opening weekend.
Starring Matt Damon and South African actor Sharlto Copley, the film had a fairly modest debut after costing $115m (£74.3m) to make.
Elysium matched studio expectations but opened with a lower figure than director Blomkamp's surprise 2009 low-budget hit, which took $37.3m (£24.1m) in its first three days.
Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, said Elysium would be "very profitable", adding "international is going to be the big, big win on this film for us".
In a crowded week for new releases, Jennifer Aniston's comedy We're The Millers took the second slot with $26.6m (£17.2m) while Disney animation Planes took $22.5m ($14.5m).
The weekend's takings brought 2013's total box office to $7bn (£4.5bn) so far.
Sci-fi Pacific Rim and Jeff Bridges' action comedy R.I.P.D were other high budget films which left studios disappointed at the box office over the summer.
Chris Aronson, the head of distribution for Fox, admitted 2013 had seen some "high-profile failures," but added, "the summer's been fantastic despite the gloom and doom some in the media have portrayed".
The summer flops have been offset by the success of films such as World War Z - which has crossed the $500m (£323m) global takings mark despite rumoured problems and reshoots - and the doomsday comedy This Is the End, which has made $96m (£62m) - three-times its budget.
Animations Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University also earned huge box office numbers worldwide, taking $746m (£482m) and $637m (£412m) respectively to date.
North American box office
- Elysium - $30.5m
- We're the Millers -$26.6m
- Planes - $22.5m
- Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - $14.6m
- 2 Guns - $11.1m

Alpha Papa tops the UK box office
Alan Partridge film Alpha Papa has topped the UK box office in its opening weekend, according to early figures.
The critically acclaimed comedy, which opened on 7 August, has made £2.17m so far in ticket sales.
The film is the first big screen outing for the comedy creation of Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci.
Details of the rest of the UK box office will be released later. Comedy Grown Ups 2 and The Lone Ranger were also released at the weekend.
A statement released on behalf of the fictional Norfolk DJ said: "Now is not a time for gloating or celebration, more a time for healing old wounds, a time to say 'let us join together in thanks that I am number one at the box office'. Hallelujah."
The film, which has gained four and five star reviews, had its premiere in Norwich after an online campaign by fans.
The character of Alan Partridge first appeared on Radio 4's On the Hour more than 20 years ago.
PM - Youths attracted by bright lights abroad, gangs at home
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday issued a message in recognition of International Youth Day, in which she noted that young people are being attracted to the bright lights abroad and criminal and gang activity locally. The following is the Prime Minister's full statement -
It is very ironic that the theme of this year's International Youth Day is, "Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward".
The 2013 observance of International Youth Day, is to raise awareness of the opportunities and risks associated with youth migration. We must engage young people in discussions on their migration experiences.
Young people make up a significant share of the global number of international migrants.
In 2010, there were an estimated 27 million international young migrants. While migration can often offer valuable opportunities and contribute to the development of communities and society at large, it can also pose risks and lead to unacceptable situations, including discrimination and exploitation.
In Trinidad and Tobago, we must be careful that we do not lose our young people. Young people are attracted by what is out there in the world today. They are attracted by the bright lights abroad.
While a large number of our young people are encouraged by the global demands, we have another problem at our door steps.
That is youth involvement in criminal activity.
A section of our young population is attracted by gang activity. According to data from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, there are close to 100 gangs operating in the country.
Most of the members are young men, aged between 14 and 25. These young men look up to the gang leaders. They love the culture. They feel they are not wanted by either their parents or teachers. They feel
no one cares too much for them.
But what is the spin-off effect? They are being wiped out. Just look at the television news at nights, or read the daily newspapers. Our young men are being dealt a deadly blow because of their association
with gangs. Look at the police statistics - most of the victims of gangland activities are youths between 14 and 25. Look at the persons being taken to court in handcuffs. They are before the courts charged with offences
such as murder, robbery with aggravation, and kidnapping. They are also involved in the drug trade. The youths are everywhere in the criminal world.
Look at how mothers hold their stomachs and cry over the loss of their sons. These youths die for no reason. And while the theme for this year's International Youth Day is "Youth Migration: Moving Development
Forward", our youths are migrating to the great beyond.
We have to protect our youths before it is too late. We appeal to parents, teachers and the churches to assist, We must watch our young men grow. We must be proud of them when they graduate
to be doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers etc. We must not be lining up at mortuaries, funeral homes, or cemeteries.
By the time the 2014 International Youth Day comes around on August 12, 2014, we must see a change. We must ensure that our youths are not involved in criminal activity. We must ensure that
our young men are not killed by rival gangs or by the police. We must uplift them, and ensure that theme "Moving Development Forward" means that our youths are moving forward in the right direction.
(On 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that August 12 be declared International Youth Day).

LIAT signs US$65m loan agreement
The shareholder governments of the regional airline, LIAT, yesterday signed a US$65 million loan agreement with the Barbados-based Caribbean Development BanK (CDB) as the cash-strapped airline seeks to upgrade its ageing fleet.
The loan represents 61 per cent of a US$100 million re-fleeting exercise being undertaken by the Antigua-based regional airline that is replacing its Canadian Dash 8 fleet with French-made ATRs.
Barbados, LIAT’s largest shareholder, takes up the bulk of the loan--US$33.2 million–while Antigua and Barbuda put up US$21.9 million, St. Vincent and Grenadines US$7 million and Dominica US$2.4 million.
But each shareholder will provide the funds to LIAT on the same terms it received from the CDB, with the airline responsible for repaying the loan over a 13-year period, following a two-year grace period.
The signing ceremony comes against increased criticism of the airline by the travelling public in recent months with long delays, numerous cancellations and lost baggage being the order of the day.
LIAT chairman Jean Holder apologised for the hiccups, assuring that positive change is coming with the airline’s re-fleeting exercise.
Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said his government had no problem coming to the table to assist LIAT, since it is not possible to contemplate a region without the airline, despite the frustration expressed by the travelling public.
“Barbados has a vested interest in the easy movement of people in this region…because Caricom is our third largest source market for tourism. So, we cannot contemplate a region without the services of an airline like LIAT.
“I don’t know of any other airlines prepared to do in this region what LIAT has done since 1956, in one form or another. Therefore, the Government of Barbados, over which I preside, had no difficulty in lending its consent to the securing of this loan,” he stated.
Stuart said that Barbados remains committed to LIAT’s cause.
“That does not mean that from time to time we too may not have to comment in ways that might make LIAT uncomfortable. But, that is not to be interpreted as any reneging from our commitment to ensuring that this regional airline maximises its opportunities and provides the kind of service to this region which they so richly deserve,” he added.
President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr. Warren Smith, stressed that reliable and efficient regional air transport is an indisposable undertaking of Caribbean development.
He said LIAT’s contribution, according to figures, shows the airline’s direct impact is estimated in excess of US$320 million.
Smith also reported that LIAT contributed an estimated US$63 million or 39 per cent of average long stay arrivals to the Caribbean.
But he pointed to significant challenges facing the aviation sector and stressed the need for Caricom leaders to revisit the issue of a regional air transport policy.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is also chairman of LIAT’s shareholders, anticipates the modernisation of aircraft together with improvements to the airline’s operations will lead to an overall improvement in the financial operations and efficiency of the airline.
He said that LIAT has already set its sights on spreading its wings.

Is there a new iPhone coming this fall?
In a day of whiplash-inducing reports about Apple’s health and future, the most tantalizing tidbit to emerge from the blogosphere was a simple date:
Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013.
That, according to a report in AllThingsD attributed only to “sources,” is when Apple will release a new iPhone.
Or perhaps two new iPhones.
Apple spokesman Steve Dowling declined to comment. But many analysts say Apple must offer a cheaper version of its iconic iPhone to stake out a position in the midrange of the smartphone market, as sales of its higher-priced flagship model continue to slow and rivals introduce their own lower-priced gadgets. In the past, Apple has chased that value-seeking consumer by selling its older-model phones for $100 or $200 less than the latest and more expensive model. But speculation has gathered that Apple in September may unveil a new iPhone 5S alongside a lower-cost iPhone.
Regardless of what Apple comes up with, analyst John Jackson of IDC in Boston says, it’s got to be a home run.
“Investors, along with the rest of the world, are waiting with increasing impatience, for Apple to wow them once again,” he said. “And whether it’s in September or not, the next event will arguably be the biggest product launch in Apple’s history because it will tell us about the future of the company as a true innovator.”
Apple’s hammered stock price, he said, is a clear sign that more and more investors are on the fence about Apple and wonder whether it can continue to live up to the legacy left by Steve Jobs of cranking out one mind-blowing product after another. “And whatever it is they introduce,” he said, “if there’s nothing that looks fundamentally new, the market will be greatly disappointed.”
There’s been buzz for months about such an unveiling. And the timing, if accurate, would be classic Apple. The company likes to announce software updates at its developers conference in June, give it a test drive for a few months, then officially release it shortly before its latest product is announced in September.
So far, this year is no exception, as Apple shared its new mobile operating software in June, promising its iOS 7 will be available to the public in the fall.
In other Apple news Monday, its stock price jumped nearly 3 percent in daytime trading, helping the stock continue its long but steady rebound after falling from more than $700 to less than $400 a share. But longtime Apple analyst Charles Wolf with Needham & Co., one of only two Apple watchers who still had a target price of more than $700 a share, said he was lowering his estimate to $595 a share.
