Dell delays vote on buyout by founder Michael Dell
Dell has announced an eleventh-hour delay on a vote on founder Michael Dell's plan to buy the computer maker.
Thursday's vote at a shareholders' meeting at Dell's Texas headquarters has been put back until next Wednesday so the board can drum up more support.
Mr Dell has spent the past five months trying to persuade shareholders to approve the buyout proposal.
But the board-backed plan has faced opposition from billionaire Carl Icahn, who argues the offer undervalues Dell.
About 300 shareholders attended the meeting, and many others had already cast proxy votes. Shareholders are allowed to change their votes until polling closes.
The board has recommended that shareholders accept Mr Dell's $24.4bn (£16bn) offer.
With the PC maker's sales and share price falling as consumers turn to tablets and mobile devices, the board thought the company had a better chance of being turned around if it was taken private.
But Mr Icahn had suggested the company buy back 1.1 billion shares at $14 a piece, and offer shareholders the right to buy more Dell shares at a later date.
The board had called Mr Icahn's proposal risky and short on details.

New Nets have championship dreams
Paul Pierce believes his new team is primed to make a run at the Eastern Conference title, although the veteran small forward has a bigger goal in mind for the Brooklyn Nets: capturing the NBA championship.
"I think we're going to be right up there with the best of them," Pierce said Thursday.
"Obviously I would've loved to have finished my career in Boston, but that day and age is finally over with. My ultimate drive is winning a championship."
Pierce was introduced in front of a large media contingent along with Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry at the Barclays Center. Garnett, Pierce and Terry were obtained in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Celtics.
Free-agent signee Andrei Kirilenko could not attend because of personal obligations overseas, Nets general manager Billy King said.
The Nets-New York Knicks rivalry is obviously on everyone's minds as well -- although all the players responded no when asked their opinion on who is No. 1 in the city.
The Nets had to persuade Garnett to waive his no-trade clause to complete the deal. They also had to guarantee his full $12 million salary for 2014-15, according to a league source.
The Nets believe the additions put them in the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference along with the likes of the two-time defending-champion Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls.
A league source said the team's payroll for next season is around $101 million, while its projected luxury-tax bill is around $83 million
The Nets have sold more than $3 million in full season tickets since the official announcement that Garnett, Pierce, Kirilenko and Terry were joining the team and are 800 full season-ticket plans shy of reaching their 13,000 full season-ticket cap.
TV umpires could overrule decisions - ICC chief
Television umpires may have a more prominent role in future on-field decisions, says International Cricket Council (ICC) chief David Richardson.
The ICC said England's Jonathan Trott should not have been given out in the first Ashes Test against Australia when key replays were unavailable.
"We've got a trial to allow the third umpire a bank of TVs so he can access technology quicker," Richardson said.
He added that "down the line" third umpires "could overrule" errors.
"I think that's probably where it will end up long term but we're still quite a way from that at the moment. We need to progress a lot further before we can take it on board in a match," Richardson said.
Trott was initially given not out, but dismissed by third umpire Marais Erasmus when Australia used the Decision Review System (DRS), despite the key HotSpot camera angle being unavailable.
TV umpires rely on being sent pictures from television broadcasters when teams ask for a decision to be reviewed, or when on-field umpires call for a second opinion on run outs or stumpings.
Richardson, who said trials would take place during the third Test at Old Trafford next month, told the BBC's Test Match Special: "That's why it has to be so quick. We don't have to depend on whether they have gone for an ad break, we want to have our own replays, not what the television is showing."
The ICC chief executive added the use of neutral umpires, obligatory in Test matches since 2002, may also be reviewed.
Eight of the 12 umpires on the elite panel are from England or Australia and therefore cannot officiate in Ashes matches.
US Stocks Hit Record Highs, Jobless Claims Decline
U.S. stock indexes (Dow and the S&P 500) hit new record highs by midday trading Thursday after some strong corporate earning reports, encouraging data on the job market, and reassurances from the head of the U.S. central bank.
Thursday's report from the Labor Department showed the number of Americans signing up for unemployment assistance dropped to its lowest level in two months. Jobless claims fell 24,000 to a nationwide total of 334,000.
Economists use unemployment insurance claims to track layoffs, and they say declining claims mean a strengthening job market.
Wednesday and Thursday, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress that efforts to stimulate the economy will continue until improved growth shows they are no longer needed. That may mean that the Fed's program of buying billions of dollars in securities each month will not be cut back until later this year, and ultra-low short-term interest rates could stay in place until sometime next year.
Britain Calls for Disabling Emergency Beacons on Boeing Dreamliners
British air safety officials say emergency beacons on Boeing 787 Dreamliners should be disabled after investigators identified them as a possible cause of the fire in a parked jet at London's Heathrow Airport last week.
The investigators said Thursday the fire on the Ethiopian Airlines jet might have originated in the transmitter batteries of the beacons, which are used to alert rescue workers in the event of an accident. The authorities said the fire last Friday might also have been caused by some "external mechanism," such as an electrical short.
he British authorities called on U.S. air safety regulators to order the disabling of the beacons on the American-made aircraft, 68 of which have been delivered to 13 airlines around the world. The beacon manufacturer, Honeywell International, said it would comply if safety officials want the devices disabled.
No one was hurt when the fire broke out on the aircraft, which was empty at the time.
Earlier this year, Boeing was forced to ground its entire fleet of Dreamliner aircraft for four months after fires started in the lithium ion batteries on two of the 787s.
