Social media giant Twitter says it was hacked this week, in a sophisticated cyber attack that exposed the passwords and other information of about 250,000 users.
The company said in a blog post Friday that it had detected unauthorized attempts to gain access to its user data. The site's information security director, Bob Lord, said Twitter employees discovered one live attack and shut it down in process moments later.
Twitter said it reset passwords and that it was notifying affected users.
Unlike the New York Times and Wall Street Journal newspapers, which said they were attacked by Chinese hackers this week, Twitter did not provide any information on where the hacking had originated. But Lord said in the posting that the attack was "not the work of amateurs," and that Twitter does not believe it was an isolated incident. He called the attackers "extremely sophisticated."
The company said it is working with government and federal law enforcement in their effort to track down the attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.
Abu Sayyaf militants release two hostages in Philippines
Islamist militants in the Philippines have released two Filipino members of a TV crew, who were kidnapped last June.
Ramel Vela and Roland Letriro have been taken to a hospital in the southern Sulu province after their release. It is unclear why the Jordanian reporter they were working with was not freed.
The men were captured as they set out to interview Abu Sayyaf militants, a group linked to al-Qaeda.
A number of foreigners are being held for ransom in the southern Philippines.
Areas within Sulu province, whose capital is Jolo, and the wider region are used as bases by Islamist militants and rebel groups.
Mr Vela, a cameraman, and Mr Letriro, an audio technician, were taken hostage as they set out to interview Abu Sayyaf militants in their jungle lair in the autonomous Sulu island province.
"They really lost weight because they were constantly under stress each day," provincial police chief Antonio Freyra told the Associated Press.
A Jordanian reporter, Abdulla Atyani, captured along with Mr Vela and Mr Letriro, is believed to still be in captivity, Mr Freya said.
Meanwhile, Warren Rodwell, an Australian kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants in 2011, was shown alive in a video posted on social media last December.
Looking thin and haggard in the video, Mr Rodwell said: "I personally hold no hope at all for being released."
The Abu Sayyaf is on the US list of terrorist organisations.
It is considered the smallest and most radical of the extremist movements in the southern Philippines.
The group remains a security threat in the impoverished region where minority Muslims have been fighting for self-rule for decades.
The main Muslim separatist group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, recently signed a peace accord with the government in exchange for broad autonomy.
But the Abu Sayyaf were among the rebel groups who refused to sign up to the peace deal.
Britain Hosting Talks with Afghan, Pakistani Leaders
High level delegations from Afghanistan and Pakistan have begun arriving in London for a summit with British Prime Minister David Cameron aimed at improving relations between the South Asian neighbors.
A Downing Street spokesman said Cameron will meet informally on Sunday with Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai and Pakistan's Asif Ali Zardari. The formal summit on Monday will also involve military leaders, foreign ministers and intelligence chiefs from both countries.
A British statement said London expects the Afghans and Pakistanis to make further progress on the outlines of a strategic partnership accord discussed in September on the sidelines of a United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
Pakistan has long been accused of using insurgent proxies to wield influence in Afghanistan, and many Western analysts believe Islamabad is continuing to shield senior members of the Taliban and other terrorist groups on Pakistani soil. Pakistan denies all involvement in Afghan affairs.
Britain's Telegraph newspaper quotes a Karzai spokesman as saying Afghans will agree to greater cooperation with its neighbor only if Islamabad shows evidence of improving border security.
White House posts Obama shooting picture on Flickr
The White House has released a picture of Barack Obama skeet-shooting - seemingly to settle a row over whether the president had fired a gun before.
Mr Obama recently told the The New Republic magazine: "Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."
The photo, dated 4 August 2012, shows Mr Obama standing in jeans, polo shirt, sunglasses and ear defenders, aiming a shotgun that has a smoking barrel.
He is due in Minneapolis on Monday to discuss his gun-control proposals.
Asked this week why more had not been said about Mr Obama's shooting habits before, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said: "Because when he goes to Camp David, he goes to spend time with his family and friends and relax, not to produce photographs."
Bridging gaps
The photograph apparently shows Mr Obama shooting clay targets on the range at the Maryland retreatThe New Republic interview, carried in the magazine's 11 February issue, quotes Mr Obama as saying he has great respect for US hunting traditions, while advising gun-control advocates to be better listeners in the firearms debate.
"I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations," he is quoted as saying. "And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas.
"And if you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were 10, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family's traditions, you can see why you'd be pretty protective of that."
"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," Obama said.
President Barack Obama last month proposed sweeping measures on guns, including a renewed ban on assault rifles and wider background checks on buyers.
The announcement came a month after the 14 December killings of 20 children and six adults at a primary school in Connecticut.
More Protests Planned for Cairo
Egypt's main opposition coalition, the National Salvation Front, is going ahead with plans to hold an anti-government march to Cairo's presidential palace on Friday.
Opposition figures have called on Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to form a national unity government that grants them seats in the Cabinet. Mr. Morsi's allies have resisted that demand, saying the opposition is trying to gain power that it could not win through elections.
On Thursday, Egypt's Islamist and liberal politicians agreed to renounce violence and join a national dialogue aimed at resolving the country's deadliest unrest in months.
Egyptian Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmed al-Tayeb chaired Thursday's meeting at the Cairo headquarters of Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning, al-Azhar. He told the representatives of the country's feuding political factions that the "only way" to solve their differences is through an inclusive dialogue.
Senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood movement that helped President Morsi sweep into power in an election last year attended the meeting.
They sat opposite prominent liberal figures such as former U.N. nuclear agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei and former Arab League chief Amr Moussa. Other participants included Egyptian youth activists and church leaders.
ElBaradei said he came out of the talks with a feeling of "optimism." He promised to do whatever he can to promote goodwill and build trust between the factions.
Delegates signed a document renouncing violent forms of protest and calling for the creation of a committee to arrange further talks as part of a national dialogue proposed by Mr. Morsi.
It is not clear whether the pledges will prevent more confrontations on the streets.
In the past week, nearly 60 people were killed in anti-government street protests in several cities, mostly along the Suez Canal.
Beyonce admits inauguration miming
Singer Beyonce has admitted miming during her rendition of the American national anthem at the inauguration of President Obama last month.
She told reporters that she was a "perfectionist" and - due to lack of rehearsal time - "did not feel comfortable taking a risk".
"I wanted to make him [Obama] and my country proud, so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track."
"I'm very proud of my performance," she said.
The star opened the press conference in New Orleans by asking reporters to stand before performing a live rendition of the national anthem.
Highlight
Millions of people tuned in to watch President Barack Obama sworn in for his second term in office on 21 January, which included performances by James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce.
The pop star's performance of the Star Spangled Banner at the inauguration was considered one of the highlights of the ceremony, but later reports suggested the singer had recorded her vocalI am a perfectionist and one thing about me is that I practise until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra," the Grammy-winning artist said on Thursday.
She said her decision to mime the track was triggered by the weather, delays and "no proper soundcheck", adding that pre-recording is "very common in the music industry".
"It was a live television show and a very, very important emotional show for me and one of my proudest moments," she said.
However, she insisted she would be singing live for her half-time Superbowl performance on Sunday - one of the most-watched TV events in the United States.
"I will absolutely be singing live. This is what I was born to do, it is what I was born for."
The National Football League also announced that singer Jennifer Hudson would be performing America the Beautiful with the chorus from Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and six adults were killed in a mass shooting in December.
Last year's Super Bowl half-time show, performed by Madonna, was watched by an average of 114 million viewers, while Janet Jackson's notorious 'wardrobe malfunction' - in 2004 - generated a record number of complaints for broadcaster CBS.

Bird said that as he penned his verse, he could only imagine the pain and frustration and sympathized with the family during their loss their child. Coldplay's Clocks is 6 Music's 'greatest hit'
Male artists dominate a listeners' poll to find BBC Radio 6 Music's top 100 tracks of the past 10 years.
Coldplay top the list with their 2003 track Clocks, ahead of Arctic Monkeys' I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and Elbow's One Day Like This.
More than 100,000 votes were cast in the poll which looks back over the 10 years since the station began in 2002.
"It's a good result for Coldplay, who were clearly one of the biggest bands of the decade," said DJ Steve Lamacq.
"But you can see the breadth of 6 Music's tastes in the rest of the top 10, including some bands who we've championed and who've broken through commercially like Elbow, and some brilliant groups who remain out there on the margins of pop like British Sea Power and The National."
Speaking on 6 Music, Coldplay's Will Champion said he was "totally blown away" by topping the poll.
"This is extraordinary. We've been listening to 6 Music since it started and I feel like our band's career and this station have grown up in parallel. This top 10 is amazing - what an amazing 10 years of music," he said.
Champion said that topping the chart was all the more surprising as "we all said not bad for a song that hasn't got a chorus".
"When I first heard it, Chris played the riff and I said 'that's a good intro what about the rest of the song?'
"I was scratching my head trying to find something that would fill a little gap in the record."
He added: "This was a first successful attempt at writing a song where the melodic hook was the key to a song rather than a big chorus. Our manager said it would never be a hit and here we are."
More than one million tracks have been played across the network since the station began in March 20026 Music's presenters, producers and staff compiled the list of 100 tracks from the past decade taken from the station's playlist, then asked listeners to vote for them in order of preference.
Voting took place from 7 - 25 January on the station's website. Listeners were limited to one vote each.
Bloodbuzz Ohio by The National and The Killers' Mr Brightside complete the top five polling at four and five respectively.
Seven Nation Army from The White Stripes - the only band in the top 10 to feature a female - was voted in at number six, followed by The Flaming Lips' Do You Realize?? and Hurt by Johnny Cash.
Rounding out the top 10 are British Sea Power's Remember Me and Radiohead's There There.
The late Amy Winehouse appears at number 25 with Rehab, behind Lana Del Rey's Video Games at 24, but ahead of Adele's Hometown Glory at 28.

Unsafe' Brazil nightclubs closed after Santa Maria fire
More than 150 nightclubs, restaurants and bars in Brazil have been deemed to be unsafe and closed by authorities.
Sunday's fire in a club in the southern city of Santa Maria, which killed 236 people, led to inspections of venues across the country.
There are temporary closures in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, the capital, Brasilia, and many smaller cities.
Investigators say lives could have been saved if regulations had been properly observed.
A 20 year-old man died in hospital, becoming the 236th victim of the fire, authorities said on Friday.
After four days of inspections, authorities in Rio de Janeiro said that 199 of the 209 venues they inspected had irregularities.
Of those, 127 have been temporarily shut and their owners given 30 days to make alterations.
In the capital, Brasilia, 16 nightclubs were closed, after authorities found they were missing licence documents.
In Brazil's biggest metropolis, Sao Paulo, safety visits found irregularities in 24 out of 39 venues.
'Maximum Prevention'
The problems range from obstructions at fire exits and problems with fire extinguishers to a lack of fire evacuation plans, alarms and emergency lights.
The pattern was the same in many smaller cities across Brazil.
Earlier this week, the governor of Sao Paulo state, Geraldo Alckmin, ordered tighter inspections of all venues, including nightclubs, cinemas and theatres.
A so-called Maximum Prevention operation was launched on Wednesday eveningThe Santa Maria police chief in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has blamed Sunday's fire on cheap fireworks meant for outdoor use.
Marcelo Arigony, who is also heading the investigation, said the band playing in the nightclub had chosen not to buy more expensive indoor flares.
Investigators also blamed the use of unsafe acoustic insulation for the toxic fumes that led to many of the deaths.
One of the four people detained is the co-owner of the nightclub.
A member of the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, suspected of starting the fire with a flare, has also been arrested.
The fire has prompted widespread domestic concern about Brazil's ability to host major sporting tournaments in the next four years.
The 2014 World Cup is set to be hosted in 12 Brazilian cities, while the 2016 Olympics are to take place in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil's Congress is set to revise legislation in an attempt to strengthen safety regulations ahead of the World Cup.
