The Rotary Club of Grand Turk- TCI in collaboration with the Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset launched on June 1, 2019 in the Island of Salt Cay, The Little Free Library.
Salt Cay’s Library, having experience significant damages to its infrastructure and materials, the Rotary Clubs in its efforts to promote literacy has provided access to a free book initiative for the students and even adults on the island of Salt Cay. This initiative will allow our students and the entire community to choose a book, read a book, return a book and the community at large to maintain the book stock at the Little Library.
Salt Cay is a small inhabited island in the southeast Turks and Caicos, with a total landmass of 2.6 square miles (6.7 sq km). Much of the cay consists of marine ponds and low elevation dry tropical brushlands. The islands population is estimated to be less than 80 and one Primary School, the Mary Robinson Primary School with a population of less than 10 students.
The Little Library shares the home of the Mary Robinson Primary School and the Salt Cay Clinic.
The community at large and beyond are asked to donate more books to this initiative, as we continue in partnership to promote Literacy throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Mrs. Almaida Wilson – District Commissioner of Salt Cay commenting on this project stated “ I was truly thrilled to witnessed this occasion along with the teacher of Mary Robinson Primary and her students. The Little Free Library will always be busy. I want to express a big thank you to the Members of the two rotary clubs who took this one step and urged that they continue moving forward in this direction. The Island of Salt Cay and our students are appreciative”
