The Peoples Democratic Movement is pleased to announce that the party’s request for financial aid for Carifta Gold Medalists Delano Williams and Domanique Missick has been approved by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government.
PDM leader Doug Parnell wrote to the Governor early Tuesday to make the request and pointed out “that all Turks and Caicos Islanders feel very proud of the accomplishments of Mr. Missick and Mr. Williams at Carifta”. He went to request that though finances are tight consideration should be given for scholarships.
“The Governor and the Advisory Council have agreed with our suggestion,” said Mr. Parnell. “TCIG would work with the Sports Commission to provide a bursary to enable the gold medalists to pursue their athletic careers.”
The PDM understands that the bursaries for gold medalists Domanique Missick and Delano Williams will not be dependent on examination performance, although some account will be taken of academic ability.
In his response to Parnell by email Governor Gordon Wetherell informed our Leader, “The matter came up at the Advisory Council yesterday where it was agreed that TCIG would work with the Sports Commission to provide a bursary to enable the gold medalists to pursue their athletic careers. To set the ball rolling, Mark spoke to the Commission last night and Delton will be pursuing with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.”
Former Minister of Sports Clarence Selver welcomed the Government’s decision which he said allows more flexibility for TCI athletes to reach their full potential. Selver said “we wish these gentlemen every success and we are looking forward to even greater achievements.” He also encouraged the entire Team TCI to continue to work hard because hard work will be rewarded.
Parnell and Selver along with Chairman Princie Harris, and former Leader and Team TCI carifta participant Floyd Seymour were among hundreds who showed up at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex Wednesday night to participate in the Victory Celebration for the TCI Carifta Team.
