On Monday, 20th November 2023, the Department of Social Development and Welfare will celebrate Universal Children’s Day, also recognized as World Day of Prayer and Action for Children (WDPAC).
Universal Children’s Day is observed as a day set aside by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), champions for children. It promotes the vital role that parents, educators, communities and all other stakeholders play in protecting and celebrating the rights of children. This day acknowledges the importance of working together to promote the healthy social development and emotional well-being of children and their families. In doing this, we generate change and fashion a system that works to support, maintain, and enhance community functioning—thereby addressing needs, fostering hope, and safeguarding the children’s future. The Turks and Caicos Islands take delight in joining the rest of the world in celebrating this day under the theme “Children’s Rights Matter.”
There has never been a more important moment than now, to educate and inspire future generations about their rights. In addition to having the same fundamental rights as adults, children and adolescents also have special rights that are tailored to meet their needs. The Child Rights Convention acknowledges that safeguarding children’s development and well-being is just as important as defending their basic human rights. It also heightens the fact that all children regardless of nationality, gender, socioeconomic status and bloodline are entitled to a basic standard of living and not a luxury enjoyed by ‘Buck, Saunders and a Few ’-child or children.
Turks and Caicos, you are reminded of your commitment and agreement to protecting the rights of our children. As the movers, shakers, and change-makers of this country, you are also called upon to set an example for others by advocating, promoting and celebrating children’s rights. Only when our people comprehend the critical importance of safeguarding our children’s rights will they truly understand the need for preservation.
The Department of Social Development and Welfare wishes all children and adolescents throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands a Happy Universal Children’s Day.
