Police confirm  to RTC news that a break-in of their unoccupied building on Airport Road where at least 2 weapons were reportedly stolen was true.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force have confirmed reports that their building, previously being used as the main police station on Old Airport Road Providenciales and currently as a storage facility, had been burglarized some time during Wednesday night.

Apparently, burglars managed to force open a door which had been secured upon the closing of the building in early June of 2011. Upon gaining access to the facility, it is believed that the burglar(s) then forcibly gained access to a locked property room and allegedly removed two hand guns. The Police are currently conducting an audit of the secured items ascertain what all were contained in the building. While Police are unable to determine what specific items are missing, they have confirmed that two (2) firearms, namely hand-guns, are among the missing items.

It was a month ago that after long being declared an environment that was un-conducive to work, and the fact that the morale of some of the officers of the force had become extremely low, that the operations of the force was relocated from airport road to its current location in Five Cays and Chalk Sound, but apparently, not everything had been moved out of the building, including some of the all important exhibits and files.

RTC News spoke with Acting Inspector Calvin Chase, RTCIPF Media Relations Officer of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, who revealed that security measures were in place at the facility but not in the form of manpower but cameras in the vicinity that may possibly provide some lead on the culprit(s) involved in the burglary.

We also questioned detective Chase about whether there were important drug exhibits and other files in that building.

Acting Inspector Chase also said that the investigation is continuing as Police canvass the area for possible clues and they are asking anyone with information which may assist in apprehending the person or persons responsible, to contact the police directly or call Crime-Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477)

Chase also took the opportunity on RTC News to appeal to motorists, especially those living in Providenciales, to be ever vigilant and not leave any valuables lying around in their vehicles, as there have been numerous instances of vehicular interference.
