Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting Statement- Police Involved Shooting

The Royal Turks & Caicos Police has sent out a report that at around 11 am on, (23rd November 2022), a police operation was carried out in the Dock Yard area on Providenciales.

During this operation, a group of men, who were believed to be carrying firearms were challenged by police officers.

One of the men, who I am now naming as Brandon Rahming, was shot by police officers and was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident in Dock Yard.

Two non-police-issue firearms were recovered at the scene of the shooting.

During the same incident, another man was arrested for firearms and drug offenses and he remains in police custody.

Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said ‘As is routine in these types of incidents, I will be inviting an independent review of the circumstances of the discharge of firearms by police officers during this morning’s incident from a Force within the Region. I expect this to begin in the next few days.’

Teachers join strike in Scotland

Most schools in Scotland were closed Thursday as thousands of teachers walked off the job, joining scores of postal workers and university lecturers in industrial action to demand better pay and working conditions to cope with the country’s cost-of-living crisis.

The teachers’ strike in Scotland, which shuttered every school on the Scottish mainland, was the first such one in the region in 40 years. Union members want a 10 percent pay rise, but Scottish authorities say they couldn’t afford that.

Elsewhere across the UK, picket lines were set up outside postal offices and universities in one of the biggest coordinated walkouts this year. In universities, some 70,000 academic staff were striking Thursday and again on November 30 in the biggest action of its kind in higher education. The action will affect an estimated 2.5 million students.

The University and College Union said lecturers and other academic staff have suffered a decade of below-inflation pay rises, with a 3 percent increase announced in the summer.

Meanwhile, workers at the Royal Mail will walk out for 48 hours on Thursday and again on Black Friday and Christmas Eve over a long-running pay dispute.

Britons have faced days of travel misery and overflowing garbage bins in recent months as unions representing multiple industries launched successive strikes. Lawyers, nurses, postal workers, and many others have walked off the job to seek pay rises that match soaring inflation. Domestic energy bills and food costs have skyrocketed this year, driving inflation to a 41-year high of 11.1 percent in October.

The latest walkouts come after the Rail, Maritime and Transport union announced Tuesday that more than 40,000 rail workers will stage fresh strikes in December and January, disrupting travel for scores of people during the busy festive season. The union said members will walk out for four days from December 13 and in the first week of January.

Pubs, bars, and other hospitality businesses have expressed dismay at the latest train strike announcement.

“Continued rail strikes have had a huge impact on our hospitality sector; preventing staff from making it into work and disrupting consumers’ plans, meaning a huge drop in sales for venues across the sector,” said Kate Nicholls, chief executive for the UKHospitality trade body.

“Further strikes during the busiest time of the year for hospitality will be devastating, just as everyone was anticipating an uninterrupted Christmas period for the first time in three years,” she added.

Manager kills six at Virginia supermarket

A longtime manager at a Walmart store in the US state of Virginia has shot dead six people and injured six others.

Officers were called to the busy branch in Chesapeake after the gunman opened fire on colleagues in a staff room.
He then turned the gun on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.
There is no clear motive for the shooting. Police are not searching for anyone else in connection with the attack.

The police have identified the gunman as 31-year-old Andre Bing. They said he was armed with a handgun as well as multiple magazines.
Walmart said he was an "overnight team lead" who had been employed there since 2010. "We are focused on doing everything we can to support our associates and their families," the company said.

Of the six injured, two are known to be in critical condition while one is in stable condition.
The first call to the police was made at 22:12 local time on Tuesday (03:12 GMT Wednesday) and officers arrived at the supermarket within two minutes.
They entered the building shortly after, and the scene was declared safe around an hour later once it had been cleared of the 50 people who were inside at the time, and all the victims had been located.

Processing the crime scene would probably take several days, Police Chief Mark Solesky told a news conference on Wednesday, adding that the investigation was being carried out with the help of the FBI.
Police on Wednesday named the victims as Lorenzo Gamble, Brian Pendleton, Kellie Pyle, Randall Blevins, and Tyneka Johnson.

A 16-year-old boy was also killed, but police are withholding his name due to his age.
Republican Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, meanwhile, ordered flags to be flown at half-staff to mark the tragedy.
"There will be time for us to react and better understand but today is a moment where we need to support these families that are facing the unimaginable," he said.

President Joe Biden described the attack as "another horrific and senseless act of violence".
"I signed the most significant gun reform in a generation, but that is not nearly enough. We must take greater action," he said.

The shooting comes just days after a gunman opened fire at an LGBT nightclub in the US state of Colorado, killing five people and leaving 17 others with gunshot injuries.
This is not the first mass shooting at a Walmart store. Twenty-three people were killed in 2019 at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. The gunman, who allegedly targeted Hispanics, is awaiting trial.

FTX crypto exchange owes biggest creditors $3.1bn

Cryptocurrency exchange FTX owes its 50 largest creditors almost $3.1bn (£2.6bn), according to a court filing.

The embattled firm, which filed for bankruptcy in the US last week, says it owes about $1.45bn to its top 10 creditors but has not named any.

The collapse of the world's second-largest crypto exchange shook confidence in the already troubled cryptocurrency market.
It also led to exchange boss Sam Bankman-Fried stepping down.

FTX's previous bankruptcy filings revealed more than one million people and businesses could be owed money following its collapse.

On Saturday, FTX said it had launched a review of its global assets and was preparing for the sale or reorganization of some businesses.
A court hearing before a US bankruptcy judge has been set for Tuesday.

It is unclear how much people who have funds in the exchange will get back at the end of bankruptcy proceedings, though many experts have warned it may be a small fraction of what they put into the firm.

Last week, new FTX chief executive John Ray hit out at the way the failed crypto exchange was run, saying he had never "seen such a complete failure of corporate controls".

Mr. Ray, who replaced Mr. Bankman-Fried, criticized a "complete absence of trustworthy financial information".

Mr. Bankman-Fried told the Vox news website he regretted filing for bankruptcy, saying the decision had largely taken financial matters out of his control. He also expressed disdain for financial regulators.

Travis Kelce's three touchdowns propel Chiefs past Chargers

Travis Kelce the tight end, scored his third touchdown of the game from quarterback Patrick Mahomes with 31 seconds remaining to propel the Kansas City Chiefs past the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 on Sunday night.

Kelce is the third tight end in the Super Bowl era with multiple three-receiving touchdown games in a season. Kelce's 11 receiving TDs this season are tied for second-most by a tight end through a team's first 10 games all-time with Tyler Eifert in 2015. The only tight end with more was Julius Thomas, who had 12 in 2014 with the Broncos.

The Chiefs are now three games ahead of the Chargers in the AFC West standings and own the tiebreaker after beating them twice this season.

The Chiefs took a lead early in the fourth quarter on Kelce's second touchdown of the game -- a 32-yard catch from Mahomes.

Kelce made the catch at the Chargers' 27 and did the rest, weaving his way through a number of defenders before finding his way to the end zone behind a key block from fellow tight end Jody Fortson.

The game also marks Kelce's 10th career multi-receiving touchdown game; he joins Tony Gonzalez (14) and Tyreek Hill (12) as the only Chiefs with 10 or more such games in franchise history.

President Biden becomes oldest commander in chief in nation's history

President Joe Biden celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, marking the first time a sitting president has reached that milestone while in office and fueling speculation about how his advancing age will affect his political future. He is the oldest person to serve as commander-in-chief in the nation's history.

President Biden -- who was the oldest person to assume the presidency in January 2021, just 61 days after his 78th birthday -- has said he intends to make another White House bid, even as his age-adjacent peers, including 82-year-old House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have made the decision to step away from leadership in order to make way for a younger generation.

79 year old, former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner to be extradicted

79-year-old, former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner, has lost an appeal against his extradition from Trinidad and Tobago to the United States in order to face fraud charges.

Warner has been indicted in the US for several offenses including bribery…. And these offenses were alleged to have been committed over a three-decade period.

Warner, who was also president of CONCACAF, the football organizing body in North and Central America and the Caribbean, also allegedly committed crimes including soliciting and accepting bribes in connection with his official duties. He handed himself to police after a warrant was issued for his arrest in 2015 but he was granted bail for 2.5 million Trinidad and Tobago dollars and ordered to give up his passport. He also allegedly accepted a million-dollar bribe from South African officials in return for voting to award them the 2010 World Cup, and allegedly bribed officials with envelopes of cash. Accused of receiving $5 million in bribes – sent via more than two dozen separate wire transfers, from 10 different shell companies to a Caribbean Football Union account he controlled at Republic Bank in Trinidad and Tobago – to vote for Russia to host the 2018 World Cup.

In 2015 he was banned by FIFA from all football-related activities at national and international levels for life, this decision coming after his extradition request by US authorities in July of that year. Warner appealed to the judicial committee of the Privy Council in London after losing a High court challenge, however, a panel of 5 judges dismissed the appeal declaring that his extradition is indeed lawful.

Warner is not the only official to be indicted in the United States, 15 others have been indicted as well.

6 Jamaican nationals have been arrested in Florida

6 Jamaican nationals have been arrested in Florida in relation to drug charges.

One of the men was wanted for allegedly firing several shots inside a restaurant in Brooklyn back in October of this year resulting in the death of an innocent bystander. The other 5 men were all charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of MDMA.

Late last week, law enforcement officials in the US confirmed that one of the men was staying at a condominium in Panama City Beach, Florida and obtained a search warrant for the said condo.

After the search of the building was concluded, the 6 men were detained when "several hundred grams of marijuana, MDMA pills and more than US$23,000" were seized.

At least 20 persons were on board the plane and there were no reports of injuries.
