MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE NAMES YAZMIN ODIA, M.D., LEAD PHYSICIAN OF MEDICAL NEUROLOGIC ONCOLOGY

Yazmin Odia, M.D., has joined the growing team of specialists at Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as lead physician of Medical Neuro-Oncology. In her new role, Dr. Odia – the only Board-certified neuro-oncologist in practice south of Orlando – further rounds out the Institute’s highly specialized and comprehensive brain tumor program, providing the southern two-thirds of the state, Latin America and the Caribbean singular access to her unique expertise in neuro-oncology cancer care.

“The addition of Dr. Odia means a tremendous breakthrough for patients in our region who are facing primary and secondary tumors of the brain, as well as those with spinal and leptomeningeal metastases,” said Michael J. Zinner, M.D., founding CEO and executive medical director of Miami Cancer Institute. “Our vision of providing world-class, destination cancer care close to home cannot be achieved without a clinician of her caliber — Board certified in both adult neurology and neuro-oncology. We are proud to be the only Cancer Institute in this area to provide this level of specialized care.”

Within Miami Cancer Institute’s multidisciplinary care paradigm, Dr. Odia will collaborate with clinical experts across the organization to provide treatment to patients with cancers of the nervous system, especially those of the brain and spine. She will also conduct clinical trials that hopefully will bring significant advances in neuro-oncology cancer care to South Florida.

In her role, Dr. Odia will closely work with internationally-renowned radiation oncologist and brain tumor expert Minesh Mehta, M.D., Miami Cancer Institute’s deputy director and chief of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Mehta specializes in the utilization of today’s most advanced radiation modalities to treat cancers of the brain, including proton therapy – a sophisticated treatment that destroys cancer cells while avoiding the healthy surrounding tissue. When Miami Cancer Institute’s proton therapy center opens in 2017, it will be the only center in the state of Florida to exclusively offer highly precise pencil-beam scanning.

Additional physicians with whom Dr. Odia will closely collaborate include Baptist Health Neuroscience Center brain tumor surgeon Vitaly Siomin, M.D. and brain tumor medical oncologist Siddhartha Venkatappa, M.D.

Dr. Odia comes to Miami Cancer Institute from New York City, where she was most recently an assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons and an assistant attending neurologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital. A Chicago Honor Scholar, she received her bachelor’s of arts and medical degree from the University of Chicago, and her Master of Science in clinical research at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She completed a residency in neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and a clinical and research fellowship in the Neuro-Oncology Branch of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

She serves on the editorial board of Clinics in Oncology — CNS Tumors and Journal of Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Odia’s numerous honors include Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Stephen Q. Shafer Award for Humanism in Neurology and John Hopkins’ Guy M. McKhann Award for Teaching and Communication Excellence; she was also named a Top Doctor in New York City in 2015 and 2016.

Dr. Odia is bilingual in English and Spanish, and will begin seeing patients in September of 2016. Miami Cancer Institute plans to begin moving into its new, $430 million state-of-the-art facility on the Baptist Hospital campus later this year. Opening day for patient care is planned for January 16, 2017.

GOVERNOR DISCUSSES DELANO'S GAMEPLAN FOR OLYMPIC MEDALS

His Excellency the Governor issued the following after meeting with Delano Williams, his mother, and Mrs Rita Gardiner BEM in Grand Turk on Tuesday, 6 September, on his return from the Rio Olympics.

"I was pleased Delano was able to find an hour in his busy post-Olympics schedule to come round to Waterloo on 6 September to talk about his experiences in Rio, and his plans. He confirmed my view that, while the disqualification had been a devastating experience for him and his team mates, he had picked himself up from it with enormous determination. Delano left me in no doubt of his aim to compete in the Olympics again in four years time in Japan, and we discussed some of the key events en route to that goal. I said that I hoped I might have the opportunity to see him competing live in the World Championships in London next year. We also discussed his participation in the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 2018, which will be another important step on the way to the Olympics.

"We also exchanged ideas about sponsorship on top of the important contributions he receives from Flow and Nike, and I made a few suggestions for him to consider. I was delighted that Delano indicated his support again for Footsteps4Good across TCI later this month, and that he hoped to participate in one of the legs of it on Provo, which can support his Foundation.

"I am in no doubt that Delano is a fantastic role model for the young of Turks and Caicos, and a great international ambassador for the country.  He has picked himself up with extraordinary resilience from the disappointments of Rio, and I'm confident all of Turks and Caicos will be able to celebrate his victories as he pursues his aim of Olympic medals."

Under the theme "Enhancing National Competitiveness", the one-day event, held at Beaches Resort Village & Spa, brought together representatives from the public and private sectors to discuss areas of importance for strengthening the Islands' economic competitiveness as well as providing an opportunity for businesses to contribute to future Government policy making.

The afternoon roundtable sessions provided engaging and enlightening discussions around three industry sectors offering potential growth for the TCI: Technology, Agri-business and Financial Services.   Facilitated by seasoned industry representatives and public officials, the roundtables elicited comments and feedback from the audience to draft a short action plan to suggest opportunities for growth of the specific sectors.

In his closing remarks, John Rutherford, CEO of Invest Turks and Caicos said that he hoped the conference will be the first of many important events the Agency organises. He thanked the plenary speakers and facilitators and stated that "the success of the event was due in no small part to the excellent contribution by all participants".  He said that it was important to keep up the momentum created by the conference and ensure that the actions and promises made were followed up.

The Honourable Washington Misick, Minister of Finance, Investment and Trade commended the Agency for a job well done and stated that the conference was an eye opener for him and he had found it extremely useful. Honourable Misick stated that it was important to continue a national dialogue on improving the economy and he announced that Invest Turks and Caicos and the Ministry of Finance would launch a quarterly Government Business Forum to identify and discuss issues and come up with specific actions. He also envisions the National Competitiveness Conference to grow into a bigger event in future years.

Invest Turks and Caicos Agency wishes to thank all participants for making the event a success and look forward to hosting similar conferences going forward.

SUCCESS FOR BARBADOS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AT THE DIGICEL JUMPSTART CLINICS

The Digicel Jumpstart Clinics were a big hit in Barbados and the Turks and Caicos Islands leaving the coaches impressed with the improvement in the programme and the skill level of the athletes in only one year. The head coaches in each market commented on the talent they saw.

The Turks and Caicos Islands:

NBA Sr. Director of Basketball Operations International, Troy Justice, said; “We’ve seen significant improvement in the programme from last year to this year – not only in the numbers, but in the talent across the islands so far. What I really found impressive was the daily improvement over the three days which means the kids were eager to learn, grasped the information and executed as practiced.”

“I love the growth in numbers and hope to make next year even bigger. It’s about growing the game and having fun doing it – it’s been a blast so far and I hope it continues,” he added.

Barbados:

Head Coach of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Houston Rockets D-League team), Matt Brase, said; “For me, it’s all about coming to the islands and imparting knowledge so, when we leave, the athletes and coaches can teach their peers. We do drills to work on the fundamentals and test them in all areas of the game like rebounding, spotting up, boxing out, transitioning from offence to defence. Most importantly, the kids had fun doing it.”

Now in their second year, the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Basketball Clinics train more than 400 of the top male and female talents across the Caribbean. The top seven players from each market will be selected to attend the Elite Camp in the British Virgin Islands in October.

Upcoming Clinics Programme Dates

Jamaica-Sept. 16-18

Dominica-Sept. 23-25

British Virgin Islands – Elite Camp Oct. 7-9

OFFICE OF THE PREMIER DR. THE HON. RUFUS W. EWING MBBS, FRCS, DM, MPH, FACS, MP MINISTERIAL STATEMENT

Mr. Speaker I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate The Rt. Excellent Theresa May on her appointment as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Territories and likewise The Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson as the new Foreign Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Baroness Anelay as the Minister with responsibility for the Overseas Territories.

Mr. Speaker as Premier I had the pleasure of hosting the Premiers of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and Montserrat; the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, the elected representative of the Falkland Islands and the Minister for Social Development of Anguilla, for a Pre-JMC Meeting last week in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Our discussions were wide ranging and fruitful and we reached consensus on our priority issues to be discussed at the Joint Ministerial Council Meeting at the end of October this year.

Mr. Speaker one of the main items on the Pre-JMC agenda was that of the Challenges and opportunities for the Overseas Territories following the UK's referendum result to leave the EU.  We have agreed that we would engage collectively with the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis MP and the Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr. Liam Fox MP and the Constitutional Group in the Cabinet Office and Leaders would also schedule bilaterally meetings with the relevant Secretaries of State.

Mr. Speaker the Leaders also discussed the various infrastructural and development needs of their respective territories under the umbrella of Sustainable Economic Development. We discussed how HMG can assist the Overseas Territories in attracting investment for infrastructure development, such as airports and seaports.

Mr. Speaker the various health challenges that exist in our territories were discussed especially in relation to access to the UK NHS for tertiary level care, mental health, procurement of drugs and medicine and the Zika epidemic that is plaguing our region and ways in which HMG can support the territories.

Mr. Speaker all of the Leaders felt that given the circumstances following Brexit, now is an appropriate time to re visit the Overseas Territories White Paper 2012 and our future partnership, and in that vein among some Territories there is a wish to undertake a Constitutional Review.

Mr. Speaker given the importance of child welfare to all territories, the Leaders of the Overseas Territories present at the Pre JMC agreed to seek approval from their Governments to sign, at the JMC, the Memorandum of Understanding and Roadmap, for the purpose of more effective safeguarding of children, as proposed by the Falkland Islands. This Memorandum clearly demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards and systems for the protection of our children. Mr. Speaker, this memorandum of understanding will be presented to our Cabinet next week for positive consideration so that the TCI can be among those territories signing the MOU in October.

Mr. Speaker these issues among others would be the subject of discussion when the OT leaders meet in London in October at the JMC with the new UK Ministers.

Mr. Speaker and fellow Turks and Caicos Islanders, as stated in the Ministry of Health Press Release on Saturday and my press statement yesterday, on July 24th my Public Health Staff in the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services reported 5 confirmed cases of Zika virus infections in the Turks and Cases Islands, three of which are clearly imported and two of which are currently undergoing further investigations to determine whether they are also imported or part of local transmissions. The Ministry of Health is working with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), PAHO and UK IHR on the investigation of these cases.

The Environmental Health Department and Public Health Disease Surveillance Team of the Ministry of Health has stepped up its surveillance activities and has been working with the persons infected with the Zika virus to ensure that the risk of in-country transmission is reduced.

Mr. Speaker, while we all know that this event was inevitable I am urging all residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands and visitors to these islands to remain calm. We are focusing our efforts on reducing the possibility of or the impact of in-country transmission of the virus.

The most significant health impact is related to the microcephalic birth defect and the neurological Guillain Barre' syndrome that is sometimes associated with the infection. Mr. Speaker, this is why the Ministry of Health and IHC has from the onset of the regional epidemic been encouraging pregnant mothers to take the necessary precautions such as use of mosquito nets (which are being provided by the health department), use of mosquito repellents, wearing of long sleeve shirts and minimizing exposed body areas as ways to reduce mosquito bites, and also encouraging persons to help reduce the mosquito population in and around their homes by cleaning up their yards and removing all catchment containers and derelict vehicles that can hold water as methods of reducing mosquito breeding.

Mr. Speaker the infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito is the only one that bites and can transmit the zika virus and others such as the dengue virus, yellow fever and Chikungunya fever and it does so nocturnally. Mr. Speaker it is with this knowledge in mind that much debate is now ongoing about the introduction of genetically modified Ades Aegypti mosquito as a means to control these diseases. Mr. Speaker this may be a viable option for the TCI as other OTs are also considering such methods, but until such time that these methods are approved the Environmental Health Department will continue its fogging activities where necessary and country-wide cleanup campaigns will also continue.
