Clyde Glinton was sentenced in the TCI

On Monday 22nd February 2016 in the Supreme Court, Clyde Scottie Glinton of Providenciales plead guilty to Theft and was sentenced to a Conditional Discharged of 3 years and a fine of $25,000 to be paid within 90 days or 12 months imprisonment.

The facts are, a complainant file a report on behalf of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government that between November 16th, 2011 and January 8th, 2012 a total of $19, 273.42 (Nineteen Thousand two hundred and seventy-three dollars and forty two-cents) were missing and unaccounted for from the Custom Department at the Providenciales International Airport. Financial Crime Investigators of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force launched investigations.

The investigation revealed that Mr Glinton, who at the time was the senior Customs Officer responsible for collecting funds from that unit (Airport Customs) and to hand over to the cashier at the central office; However, between November 16th, 2011 and January 8th, 2012 this was not done.

On September 20th, 2013 investigators arrested and formally charged Mr Glinton for Theft.


Police read for kindergarten children as part of school program

When the Kindergartners at the Enid Capron Primary School saw Acting Assistant Superintendent Butterfield of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force this morning, they were overjoyed and shouted, “Police!”

As part of the school’s 1st Annual Literacy Drive, which aims to engage parents, community, staff and students to promote the importance of reading and writing, Officer Butterfield was invited to read to the students.

Assistant Superintendent Butterfield said she looks forward to reading to the children. “It gives them a positive idea of what officers are and that we are here to help them; we’re here to help guide them”. She said.

Before reading the two (2) books from Dr. Seuss collection ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ and Mr. Brown can moo’ to the three Kindergarten classes, she informed the children that the Police are their friends and are there to protect them.

The children listened attentively and were able to answer questions about the books correctly.

“An early love of reading often translates into a thirst for knowledge that lasts a lifetime,” said Officer Butterfield. The children paid attention and showed much interest during the reading session.

According to the Principal Mrs. Garland, “The Program is designed to assist the students with their reading and writing skills. We have planned a read aloud with Community persons, parent workshops in literacy and each month a teacher’s workshop in literacy. We are thankful for the police taking time from their busy schedule to come and read to our students.” 


Police Investigate shooting Incident

Investigators of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are investigating an incident of a shooting that occurred earlier today when a 21-year-old female was shot.

At around 4:18 am today (Monday 22nd February 2016) officers responded to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre where the female was seen complaining that she was shot in the back. She told officers that she was riding with a male friend driving in the Kew Town area and upon reaching Walter Cox Drive some men tried to stop them. The driver did not stop; as a result, one of the men began shooting at the vehicle.

The vehicle also checked where bullet holes were seen at the rear of it.

A crime scene was established, and investigations are ongoing.

Nathanelle Louis to be sentenced next week Monday 29th

In November of 2015, Nathanelle Louis of Haiti who was charged and who pleaded guilty to a number of Money Laundering charges in the Supreme Court will be sentenced next week (Monday 29th February 2016).

The charges were Concealing Criminal Property, Removing Criminal Property from the Islands and Possession of Criminal Property; all from the Proceed of Crime Ordinance.

The facts are, a complainant stated that on Friday 27th February 2015 he checked his account online and discovered three (3) unauthorized internet wire transfers dated 27/02/2015 of $4,620.00USD, 26/02/2015 of $4,620.00USD and $3,000.00USD. A report was made and officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force Financial Crime Unit commenced investigations.

Investigation revealed that Ms. Louis was contacted via Facebook by an individual unknown to her by the name of Lucia Myk, who offered her (Ms. Louis) a job. The particulars of the job were for her to evaluate and comment on customer services at Money Gram and Western Union. In order to assess and comment on customer services Lucia Myk requested Ms. Louis’s Bank account number which she gave so that monies can be transferred to her account so that the evaluation can be carried out. She would be paid 10% of each evaluation she carried out.

Between Thursday 26th and Friday 27th February, 2015 The total amount of $12,240 was withdrawn from the complainant’s bank account and was wire transferred to Nathanelle Louis’ account. The monies were withdrawn from her account and was sent via Money Gram to persons unknown to her namely Undgwa Joy Onyinpechukuu, and Kalu Joseph Nkobi.

On Thursday 27th August 2015 she was formally charged and cautioned for the offences.

In November 2015 Nathanelle Louis plead guilty to the charges.


TCI Church Softball moves from Night League to Day League

The Church Slow Pitch Co-Ed  league began yesterday at the downtown ball park, as the lights at the National Stadium are not working properly and RTC Sports was told by Senior members of the Softball Federation that there are no lights at the down town ball park were the games are being played.

RTC Sports learnt that on Saturday, some members of various domination's expressed how unhappy they were about the changes because the churches schedule had to keep changing which is affecting the league. The change is from playing in the nights to playing in the day.

Three games will be played every Saturday moving forward, in the first game that started at 1.30pm over the weekend, Bethany Baptist Church took on Methodist Church, this was a very exciting game.

President Been told us that the Methodist was a much improved team, leading in every inning until the last inning when Bethany began hitting coming from behind to win that game 9 to 8.

In the second which commenced at 3.15pm, St Monica's Anglican Church took on Global United Fellowship, this was another exciting game, this game was back and forward until the last inning when St Monica,s pull out the win with a16 to 15 victor.

The final  game which began at 5pm between the 2015 Champs, the  Roman Catholic Church and Prophecy Church was an anticipated match up of last season. The fans wanted to see this match up because of these two teams history; this game lived up to its expectations with great plays, but the Romans showed why they are the champs by beating Prophecy Prophecy  11 to 6 to much amazement.

The next games will be held on Saturday  February 27th and RTC Sports will be there.


Rihanna & Drake Climb to No. 1 on Hot 100 with "Work"

Rihanna's "Work," featuring Drake, has climbed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to the publication, the reggae-inspired tune marks Rih Rih's 14th chart-topper and pushes her past a tie with Michael Jackson -- she now only sits behind Mariah Carey with 18 hits and The Beatles with 20 toppers. The song also is Drake's second to top the Hot 100 following his previous 2010 duet with Rih on "What's My Name?"

In addition, "Work" has helped the Barbados-born singer and Canadian rapper extend the record of non-American-born acts leading the chart to 33 weeks.

After learning the news, Rihanna  took to Twitter to express her gratitude. "#WORK tops Billboard #Hot100!! Navy you killed it this week! #NavyRDie," she tweeted.

Meanwhile, Drizzy thanked Rihanna for the collaboration. "Two number ones and they are both cause of you...Midas Touch Riri. Thank you!!!" Drake wrote on Instagram, along with a caption of him hugging her.

US, Russia Announce Cease-fire Plan for Syria

The United States and Russia have agreed on plans for a cessation of hostilities in Syria, a move that could pave the way for an expansion of humanitarian aid to besieged cities and set the stage for a resumption of talks on a political transition.

In a joint statement Monday, the U.S. and Russia proposed the cease-fire begin on February 27.

It would apply to all parties in the conflict, with the exception of terrorist groups such as the Islamic State group and al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra.

The White House said President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone Monday to discuss the agreement.

The joint U.S-Russian statement said a “communication hotline” would be established to help promote and sustain a cease-fire and that a working group, would be set up for an exchange of information, if necessary.

“Over the coming days, we will be working to secure commitments from key parties that they will abide by the terms of this cessation,” said Secretary of State John Kerry.

“This is a moment of promise,” he said, but added that fulfillment depended on actions.

The U.S. and Russia are co-chairs of a cease-fire task force that is part of the 17-nation International Syria Support Group.


CARICOM mounts Observer Mission for Jamaica's elections

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is mounting a CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission to monitor the general elections to be held in Jamaica, Thursday 25 February 2016.

The Mission is being headed by Ms. Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Elections and Boundaries Department, Belize.

The other members of the Mission comprise experts in electoral management and administration from Barbados, The Bahamas, Dominica, Saint Lucia,  St. Kitts and Nevis,   St Vincent and the Grenadines, and  Trinidad and Tobago.

Members of the Mission and the CARICOM Secretariat Support Staff were scheduled to  begin arriving in Jamaica from 21 February  and will depart by 27 February.

The CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission will meet with Jamaican electoral officials, leaders of political parties and other stakeholders.  On the day of the Elections, the Mission will monitor the electoral process including the opening of the Poll, the voting process, the closing of the Poll and the counting of the ballots.

The Observer Mission will issue a preliminary statement based on its observations and findings.  A Report of the General Elections will be subsequently prepared and submitted to the CARICOM Secretary General.

For CARICOM, election observation serves as a platform to support existing democratic traditions within the Caribbean Community as part of its wider policy of supporting democracy.


28 year old Sentenced to Prison

On Thursday 18th, February 2016 Rashad Stubbs of the Bight Providenciales was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment after he was found guilty on charges of Keeping Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Cocaine and Unlawful Possession of Cannabis in the Supreme Court.

He was sentenced to five (5) years Imprisonment for keeping Firearm, nine (9) months for Unlawful Possession of Cocaine and four (4) months for Unlawful Possession of Cannabis.

The facts are, on Friday 20th March 2015 acting on information received, investigators of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force executed a search warrant on the home of Mr. Stubbs. During the search, 1.0 grams of cannabis, 4.0 grams of cocaine, a silver and black Smith and Wesson firearm were found. 

All sentences will run concurrently.


Three men rescued at sea by Marine Police

Three men, adrifted at sea since Wednesday 17th February 2016, have been rescued by Marine Officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

It was reported that at 9 am the same day that the three (3) men went fishing on a blue 21ft vessel with a 150 horse power engine. Marine officers immediately launched a search and rescue operation with Sea Defender.

On Thursday 18th February 2016 the vessel was found at position 21degree 33.149N and 072 degree 14.984 W at French Cay with the three on board with no injuries reported.

According to Sergeant Croy Lightbourne, "We were heading to Sand Split when we noticed a bushfire coming from French Cay, which causes us to head to that area.  Dive boats frequently anchor to that Cay but at the time of the fire, the boats were far away. That was unusual, so we went there instead and found the men.”

The three men informed officers that they encounter engine problems at West Sand Split about two (2) miles south-east of French Cay. However, they swim to French Cay where they stayed overnight and awaited help.

They were towed into Bay Cay in the area of Five Cays, Providenciales.
