VW Golf wins Motor Trend 'Car of the Year'
Volkswagen's new-generation Golf models are the Motor Trend Car of the Year winner, the automaker and the publicatin announced today.
It's another in an unusually strong award showing by the latest Golf models. They are VW's best-sellers worldwide, but have been only mid-pack among VW's sold in the U.S.
The brand is hoping the new design, new drivetrain, and now the growing list of awards, will boost the Golf's appeal and sales here.
The Motor Trend award is to the Golf 'family' of cars, which includes the GTI high-performanc model on sale since spring, and the rest of the line that went on sale after that.
The other models include a diesel, a gasoline-power car and an electric e-Golf.
VW next year adds the 292-horsepower, all-wheel-drive Golf R and the Golf SportWagen, previously sold as the Jetta SportWagen.
Motor Trend's COTY award is among the best-known and becomes a useful and -- the industry believes -- powerful marketing tool. Such so-callled "third party" awards are assumed to be more persuasive than car companies' own advertising.
The GTI version of Golf won the Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek Cheap Speed Challenge in July,

Oil prices likely to fall into next year, says IEA
Oil prices are likely to continue falling well into 2015, the International Energy Agency has said.
The IEA, a consultancy to 29 countries, said weak demand and the US shale gas boom meant crude's recent fall below $80 a barrel was not over.
On Friday, Brent crude, one of the major price benchmarks, traded at $78.13 a barrel, near a four-year low.
"It is increasingly clear that we have begun a new chapter in the history of the oil markets," the IEA said.
"Barring any new supply problems, downward price pressures could build further in the first half of 2015."
The organisation, set up after the "oil shock" of the early 1970s to advise major oil importing countries, said that pressure was building on the Opec oil producers' group to restrict supply to bolster prices.
However, there have been reports that Saudi Arabia, Opec's key member, is not yet willing to turn off the taps. Opec members are due to meet on 27 November to discuss the supply and demand issues.
Most Opec members rely on oil revenues to support economic growth and spending.
Also, it is likely that oil and gas explorers will become increasingly worried that falling prices will make exploration uneconomical.
Brent has fallen for eight weeks in a row, its longest losing streak since 1988, according to Reuters' data.
The US energy department said this week that it expected low fuel prices to last into next year.

Exxon to become second largest firm to Microsoft
Energy giant Exxon has ceded its position as the world's second-largest public company to tech firm Microsoft, after concerns about the falling price of oil drove its shares down.
Exxon's shares traded at $94.90 midday on Friday, reducing the total value of all its shares, or market capitalisation, to $401.9bn (£256.7bn).
Shares in Microsoft - which have been rising after a strong October earnings report - hit $49.81.
That gives it a value of $410.5bn.
Overall, shares in oil companies have been hit in recent weeks, as oil prices have continued to plummet.
More production from US oil fields has led to an increased supply of oil just as some of the world's largest economies - most notably, China - have begun to slow down.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has benefitted from Wall Street's approval of newly-installed boss, Satya Nadella.
The price of the tech giant's shares are up over 30% over the year - the highest it has been for a decade.
Investors have been pleased with Mr Nadella's emphasis on web-based Cloud services, and his efforts to undo the mistakes of Windows 8.
However, Apple still remains the world's biggest public company, by some distance.
It is currently worth around $667.9bn.
