Clinton Takes Responsibility for Diplomatic Security

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is taking responsibility for a deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya last month, saying it is her job to be in charge of security for State Department employees working around the world.

Clinton said in television interviews during a visit to Peru Monday that President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden would not know about specific decisions made by security personnel.

She also said circumstances surrounding attacks like the one on September 11 that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans are not always clear at the time.

The attack, and the Obama administration's response, have become an issue in the presidential campaign. Republican candidate Mitt Romney has criticized Obama for not providing more security at the consulate in Benghazi.

Clinton said Monday she did not want the attack to be part of a political "blame game."

The Obama administration initially said the assault came after a protest against an anti-Islam film made in the United States, but now says it was a terrorist attack.

Senator John McCain and two other Republican senators said in a statement late Monday that Clinton's comments were a "laudable gesture," but that responsibility ultimately lies with the president.

Vice President Biden said last week during a debate with Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, that he and Obama did not know about requests for extra security at the consulate.

Testimony before a congressional committee earlier in the week showed the State Department had turned down several requests for more security at the site. A State Department official told lawmakers that the correct number of security officers were in Benghazi at the time of the attack.

Obama Looks to Revive Campaign in Second Debate With Romney

Aides to U.S. President Barack Obama say he will deliver a much stronger performance when he meets Republican challenger Mitt Romney Tuesday night in their second debate.

Obama was heavily criticized after his first debate on October 3 for appearing listless and ill-prepared against Romney, who who was far more engaged and aggressive. The president's poor showing led to a surge of support in voter opinion polls for his Republican rival, leaving both candidates locked in a virtual tie.

Tuesday's debate at New York's Hofstra University will utilize a so-called "town hall" format, where an audience of pre-selected undecided voters will pose questions to Obama and Romney.

The president spent several days last week preparing for the event at a resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, and aides say he will be more aggressive in challenging Romney's positions.

Romney's campaign announced Monday that it had raised $170 million in September. The Obama campaign announced last week that it had raised $181 million last month.

President Obama weighs in on Nicki/Mariah beef

The blowout between "American Idol" judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj was bad enough to draw the attention of President Obama, apparently.

During a recent call on "The Yo! Show," the president was asked about the "Idol" drama, which revolved around a contentious and curse-laden exchange between Minaj and Carey.

But for Obama, those fighting words don't signal an irreparable relationship.

"You know what, I think that they are going to be able to sort it out. I'm confident," Obama told the show's host, Michael Yo. "I'm all about bringing people together, working for the same cause. So, I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that they're moving forward and not going backwards."

Obama also neatly avoided taking a side in the disagreement when asked if he had a favorite out of the pair.

"Mariah, she's actually done some events for us, and I've gotten to know her and [husband] Nick [Cannon] and she's a wonderful lady," he said, while adding, "Nicki I don't know, but I've got her on my iPod."

Since he pays attention to it, how does he think he'd fare on "Idol"? Well, the president responded, "You've heard me sing some Al Green, [but] I'm going to try to keep my day job."

Tina Fey to co-host next year's Golden Globe ceremony

Tina Fey of 30 Rock fame is to reunite with fellow US comedy star Amy Poehler to host the 70th annual Golden Globes ceremony in 2013.

The "magnetic duo" replace British comedian Ricky Gervais who has been the show's acerbic host since 2010.

Fey and Poehler previously starred together in the film Mean Girls and on Saturday Night Live.

The awards, voted for by Hollywood's foreign press, will air on January 13, less than two weeks before the Oscars.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC, who organise the event were "thrilled" to have Fey and Poehler on board, with Paul Telegedy, of NBC describing their involvement as a "major coup".

"Tina and Amy have a proven chemistry and comedic timing from their many years together on SNL to their successful co-starring roles in Baby Mama," he said.

Poehler's show, Parks and Recreation is currently in its fifth season on NBC, while Fey's 30 Rock is airing its seventh and final season on the network.

The comedic duo previously co-hosted Weekend Update, a satirical news sketch on SNL, from 2004 to 2006.

British comedian Gervais, who spent three years ruffling feathers in Hollywood by making barbs about some of its stars, announced earlier this year that he would not be returning as host.

Viewing figures dipped slightly this year from 17 million in 2011 to 16.8 million in 2012, with many observers noting that Gervais' jokes seemed less caustic than in previous years.

The Globes are usually handed out about a week before the Academy Award nominations are announced, but that won't be the case next year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has moved up the Oscar nominations announcement to 10 Jan - three days before the Globes are set to air..

The 85th annual Academy Awards, which will be hosted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, is to be held on on 24 February.
