U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have intercepted nearly 1,600 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a commercial shipment of tomatillos at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, California.
The massive drug seizure, valued at approximately $2.5 million dollars, marks another significant effort by U.S. authorities to combat drug trafficking along the southern border.
Officials revealed details of the operation during a joint press conference on Friday, October 16th, involving CBP’s Office of Field Operations, U.S. Border Patrol, Air and Marine Operations, and Homeland Security Investigations.
CBP San Diego Director of Field Operations Sidney Aki said the attempted smuggling operation highlights the increasingly sophisticated tactics used by drug cartels to move illegal narcotics into the United States while evading border security.
Authorities emphasized that criminal organizations continue to exploit legitimate commercial shipments in their efforts to transport dangerous drugs across international borders.
The seizure also underscores the importance of cooperation among federal law enforcement agencies working to dismantle drug trafficking networks.
