A fire in Five Cays, Providenciales, has added to growing concerns about a recent series of fires across the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The latest incident left four families without homes, as firefighters responded to a blaze in the Five Cays area.
Speaking with a local news organization, Minister of Public Safety Hon. Shaun D. Malcolm praised the Turks and Caicos Islands Fire and Rescue Service for its response, highlighting the quick arrival of firefighters and their efforts to prevent the flames from spreading further.
Minister Malcolm acknowledged the challenges posed by the closely built homes in the area, noting that the layout of the community can contribute to fires spreading quickly and potentially causing significant damage. Four families have been displaced as a result of the fire. The Minister says the government, through the Social Welfare Department, has been working with the affected residents to ensure they receive assistance while they are without homes.
The latest fire comes just days after two separate vehicle fires were reported on Grand Turk, prompting concerns among residents about a possible pattern of fires. Minister Malcolm says those previous incidents remain under investigation. He also says the government is focused on restructuring the Fire and Rescue Service across the Turks and Caicos Islands as part of wider efforts to strengthen public safety.
According to the Minister, firefighters are now operating on a 24-hour basis to ensure emergency response and public safety coverage.
Malcolm also pointed to an upcoming national security meeting, which he says will form part of ongoing discussions about the country’s security and emergency response capabilities.
He thanked firefighters for their continued work and quick response to recent incidents, while reassuring residents that changes are being made.
