Britain's Brexit Vote Spurs Wild Trading, Gambling
Currency traders are dubbing it the "remain bounce," buying Britain's pound after torrid sales of sterling last week when markets feared the European Union's most reluctant member would head for the exit door.
As British voters prepare for Thursday's Brexit referendum on whether to leave the 28-member union, European stock markets have been enjoying a parallel upswing. Trading volumes were up by 60 percent Monday, adding more than $68 billion to the value of Britain's biggest companies and making up for the dramatic flight from British stocks last week.
The frenetic activity was triggered by a series of weekend opinion polls suggesting the Remain in the EU camp may have snatched back the lead – if only by a percentage point or two – from Leave the EU campaigners.
Tuesday, Britain's currency and stock traders paused, holding their positions as they tried to work out whether they had gone overboard Monday.
Most Asian markets extended Monday's global rally on easing Brexit concerns. In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 closed 1.28 percent higher. "The markets have a myopic focus on one thing: the U.K. referendum vote," Chris Weston, an IG Markets strategist in Melbourne, wrote in an analysis Monday.
Bankers, currency traders, investors and gamblers have a lot riding on Brexit.
Senate Grieves for Orlando, Blocks Gun Reforms
Eight days after the deadliest mass shooting in American history, the U.S. Senate voted down a series of proposals to restrict those eligible to buy firearms and expand screening of gun purchasers.
Late Monday, Republicans blocked two longstanding proposals that Democrats championed with renewed vigor after Islamic State-inspired shooter Omar Mateen killed 49 clubgoers and wounded 53 others just over a week ago in Orlando, Florida.
One measure would block those on a variety of federal terror watchlists, including those barred from flying, from buying guns. Another would expand mandatory background checks for firearms purchases to include gun show and internet sales.
Both measures failed to get the three-fifths backing required to be attached as amendments to pending legislation in the Senate.
"I'm mortified by today's vote," said Democrat Chris Murphy, who commandeered the Senate floor for 15 hours last week to demand legislative action on gun violence.
"What am I going to tell 49 grieving families [in Orlando]?" asked Florida Democrat Bill Nelson. "Sadly, what I'm going to have to tell them is the NRA [National Rifle Association gun rights lobbying group] won again."
Republicans said they could not vote for any proposal that did not provide a means for those wrongly placed on the terror watchlist to contest the government's determination, alleging the Democratic measure would deny Americans their constitutional right to bear arms without due process of law.
Clinton's Campaign Holds Huge Fundraising Lead Over Trump
It takes money to win an election in the United States, and so far presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign is easily winning that battle.
According to documents filed Monday with the Federal Elections Commission, Clinton raised more than $26 million in May and began this month with $42.5 million in the bank.
By contrast, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump's campaign had just $1.3 million. He raised $5.6 million in May, began the month with $2.4 million and spent $6.7 million.
Both Trump and Clinton will get help from their parties and from outside groups known as super PACs that will spend money on television advertisements backing the candidates. But it is important for each of them to have a lot of their own money to spend on ads of their own and campaigning efforts across the country's 50 states.
President Barack Obama's campaign committee spent over $775 million of its own money to get him re-elected. His challenger, Republican Mitt Romney, spent $460 million. The parties and super PACS added several hundred million more dollars to the race in order to run a modern day elections.

Jamaica prepares to tap into climate change fund
Jamaica is preparing to tap into US$10.3 billion available to fund climate change adaptation and mitigation projects.
The country is joining 200 other developing states in formulating viable proposals to access financing from the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
Based in South Korea, the GCF was founded as a mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.
Jamaica has, so far, submitted a proposal to the GCF for readiness financing amounting to US$300,000.
According to Principal Director, Climate Change Division in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Albert Daley, this will assist with financing "to help to put in place the system and the procedures to enable the country to access funding, training, public awareness, and setting up the work programme."
"We are hoping to get word from the GCF before the end of the month and if that happens, we will be well on our way with some funds to start put in place what we need to do to prepare ourselves to get proposals out, hopefully by early next year and thereafter," he added.
