Rep. Mike Johnson has been elected as the 56th speaker of the House of Representatives. Every single House Republican voted for him, giving him 220 votes.
The hard-liner from Louisiana won his party’s nomination Tuesday night, following a chaotic battle for the speakership that has dragged on since Kevin McCarthy was ousted as leader of the chamber on October 3.
Three other lawmakers — House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer — could not unify the party enough to be elected as McCarthy’s successor.
Johnson prevailed over House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a 220-209 vote.
